Some 9x23 questions?

After all the talk I want to start a 9x23 project. I can't afford a full house gun, so I am looking into a conversion of a gun in another caliber. I am assuming any 9mm, 38 super gun is ok? The Colt 1991 and the new Springfield Armory pistols look to be the most readily available, is one better then the other?

I know Dane is "the King of 9x23," and probably shouldn't ask, but which pistolsmiths know what they are doing when it comes to the 9x23?

I already have a S&W 940 that I want to get a conversion done on also :wink:...

I have discussed with and/or read posts from several pistolsmiths regarding the 9x23.

Dane really is the guru of 9x23. He has the best handle on it. There are several critical issues I have seen glossed over by some otherwise very competent and knowledgable pistolsmiths. Dane understands these issues and has the expertise to modify the gun accordingly for maximum performance and reliability.

Heinie, Garthwaite, Tim Bacus, Steve Morrison are all credible on the 9x23. I suspect Vickers but I don't know that for a fact.

Larry, have you played with the 9x23?

Find a smith who carries one in a 5" and shoots factory Winchester ammo....not one who plays game with a race gun. Totally different animals.

My choice would be the Colt guns in 9mm or 38 Super for a base gun. The 9mm Springfield would also be fine and less expensive for what has to be done long term and more user friendly out of the box.

Depends on your taste and pocket book.

Dane is the guru of the 9x23,listen to him. You can convert a 9mm or 38 super Colt or Springfield. I've seen some factory guns available at a reasonable cost. Colt produced some nice enhanced 80 series guns in 9x23 and even some dual caliber guns(9x23 and 38 super 2 barrel sets). I just picked up a NIB 9x23 Colt for 600.00. It's no Burns gun but it would be a good base gun to build. If you like the 70 series they are available in the 500-700 range in 9mm and 38 super. The older guns need new barrels, they came with small OD's. Springfield also produce a 9x23 with a supported barrel that run in the 400-600 dollar range. I like the colts better either 70 or 80 series. Good Luck in your quest.

Thanks Mute...tired of screwin' around...I need a couple to get some projects started before every smith we know has a 10 year back-log...Hell...I don't expect to be here that long!

Gyp_c, everyone wants too much for them, thats why I settled for a series 80. Looking around, the cheapest I found was $800 and that was looking. Sometimes, you can find a great buy on GunsAmerica, but I try to stay away from private sales and deal strictly with FFL. Gunbroker is also another one you can try.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen any Series 70 going for less the $750+ range. If you really don't like the Series 80 safety, just have whoever is working on the gun remove it and put in a filler piece.

Good points...If I can find a decent Colt anything...even an old one, I'm gonna' buy them wherever I can...If I can divert other play monies, that is...I have a line on some other base parts for Officers size but Da' boss says to find a full-size 5" and do it right to start...Who am I to argue wit' da' boss?

I did see a local 80 series,(which is highly unusual here) and if it looks like it should that'll be the first...Kinda' like fish stories though aren't they?
