9mm Largo

I'm confused..........which is how I spend most my time, but I'm hoping someone out there can help. I'm interested in building a Gov. Model in 9x23. I have an opportunity to buy a new (in the box) 80 Series Colt in 9mm Largo ($799.00 - high?, low?, reasonable?). My problem is I really don't know much about this caliber. Can anyone fill me in? Would it make a good platform to build a 9x23? Is it more or less powerful than the 9x23? Is it a decent defense round in and of itself? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I never heard of a factory Colt 9mm Largo...

but then again, I am also new to these cartridges. I do have a stainless Springfield 9mm, that has a fitted Storm Lake 9x23 barrel on it. From what I've learned, seems like the Largo is pretty close in dimensions to the 9x23, but a lower pressure round. Have read somewhere that if one wanted to shoot cheap 9x23 ammo, use the 9mm Largo? But I guess as Dane always says, if you want a 9x23, chamber it for the correct chamber. If interested, e-mail me at dmadriaga@ascg.com

This from the sticky on the 9x23 topic heading. Might want to take a look there first.

4) Factory ammo? Winchester has two loads that max out this caliber with the powder they used...WAP. CP and Mullins offer factory 9x23 last I checked. 9mm Largo ammo does NOT run in a 9x23. The OAL is too long. Shortening the OAL will up the pressure to a dangerious level and you'll blow a case.

9x23 Largo is a nice plinking caliber...just too bad I have never seen any factory loaded ammo that will fit in a 1911 mag.

Dane-thanks for coming in and ...

straitening things out. How can I find out about the other factory loads from "CP and Mullins"? They have a site? Thanks, Dennis

I appreciate the information fellas. I had never seen a factory Colt in 9mm Largo either. Think maybe I'll hold off.
