Defensive ammo suggestion / feeding problem with SXT

My Springer does not seem to like Winchester SXT very much....i've had a few FTF's with it, but none with ball ammo. First off, is there a reason why I would have problems with SXT? Second, what defensive ammo (i.e. that feeds well) would you recommend?

You don't mention just which model this is, but I have seen quite a few problems with feeding on Springfield Armory guns (all models) - nothing that cant be fixed by a knowledgable 'smith in about 15 minutes but never the less enough that I can't give them a blanket recomendation (the guns are sound enough, and some runs are just fine out of the box but one just never knows until he shoots them).

It is a close enough thing that they might feed one brand and not another but I have not seen any particular feeding problems with the SXT (though I don't like them as well as the white box JHP sold as Personal Defense ammo form a feeding point of view). Might try Remington Golden Sabre. In my experience if it won't feed SXT it may not feed Speer G-D as well though.

Good luck!!

thanks for the replies...i'm a new shooter, so excuse the absence of necessary info.

Yep, it's a Springfield loaded full size (about 1100 rounds through it). I've had a few FTF's, and it seems they have occurred with the SXT's. I wouldn't really know how to "describe" the failures, as I just learned recently what a "FTF" even is. :) I really would like to have the gun worked over a bit by a smith, just so I can ensure flawless feeding of HP's. It has fed a few different brands of ball ammo with really no problems whatsoever.

Mas, if the round is making it up to start entering the chamber then the problem is probably that the bottom of the chamber in the barrel is sort of sharp. If it is hanging up on the frame or lower part then it could be simply that the surface is not polished enough.

It could also be magazines (yes even factory mags). Try a Wilson or McCormic Power Mag and see if you get any problems with that.

I am betting that it will not take much to solve this problem but be careful and dont try "kitchen table gunsmiting", that is were most problems with 1911s come from - right Dane? :) As Ken Hackathorn says, anyone should be able to walk in off the street and buy a machinegun but a Dremel Tool should take a license and a 15day "cooling off period"!

Keep us posted!

Mas;
I did not answer the second part of your original question. Using good mags, my old unmodified G.I. 1911a1s and 1911s (one made in 1912) will feed Remington Golden Sabre, Remington regular JHP (both weights), Federal Hydra-Shok (the newer rounded profile), Winchester "Subsonic" and the "Personal Defense" in the white box (same loads, just different packaging), and Winchester Ranger T (LE ammo). That does not mean others will not feed but I did not have good luck with the original Hydra-Shok in the G.I. guns (worked fine in my Kimbers). Also similar "square" shaped bullets (truncated cone) don't feed too well in the stock G.I. guns unless the edge of the meplat is rounded some. The new Federal EXFMJs feed well also but they have just dropped the 200 gr. version so I have little interest in them now.

I hasten to point out that I mostly use Wilson or McCormick mags or quality mags of similar design (such as Mag-pak or the older Devel).

Good luck!
