an adjustable trigger pull in 1911 style pistols

During the 60s I came up with an idea that had some merit then and I think now too. The thought of haveing anadjustable trigger pull without changing parts for certain applications was wothwhile. If you look at the mainspring housing from the rear you see the pin which holds the mainspring in. If you very carefully spot the area on the left side of the housing you drill and tap a hole for a 4-40 set screw being carefull not to have the hole break into the spring hole. You now probably have a trigger pull that was initially set at 2 1/2 to 3 lbs. Now by turning in the setscrew it puts pressure on the long leaf of the sear spring and you can get 4 lbs easilly. Reason for this whole deal is that you may want to carry the pistol in the field and dont want the pull too lite or you want to shoot one hardball match now and then. I did this at Camp Perry that year for new shooters who had only one 45 and it worked fine. The next year tho one of the guys checking trigger pulls spotted it and it was not accepted as it would be too easy to have the pistolweighed at 4 lbs and then lowered to 3. I have done it many times since tho for one of the above reasons.

an adjustable trigger pull in 1911 style pistols

Hello Mr. Behlert,
The late Jim Clark Sr. also used this method as I have 2 of his old bullseye pistols with the adjustable screw, given to me by my father. The screw works marvelously!! Very easy to dial in the exact pull weight one needs.
