| Pre-War Colt Commercial Parts question
I need some assistance with identifying the correct parts for my Colt 1911a1 1937 Commercial .45. At some point in time a previous owner changed the factory trigger, sights, grips and mainspring housing. I am attempting to locate correct original parts. At this point I need to know what to replace these parts with. I think the trigger should be milled and short with a checkered pad. I think the front sight should be of a rounded side profile and the frontal profile should be parallel sides (not tapered top to bottom). I think the rear sight should be of the square profile with a U notch. I think the mainspring housing is to be checkered with a total of 26 lines. I think the grips are to be fully checkered walnut. If anyone can verify this information I would appreciate it greatly. I have read here and there about all of these parts and have had some conflicting reports. I am hoping from your responses that I can finally put to rest the search for identifying the correct parts. Thank you for your help. |

There is a special issue from Guns & Ammo on the newstands right now called "The Complete Book of the 1911." I just bought a copy yesterday. It's got some terrific photos of various old 1911s and it would probably help you see what parts you're looking for.

You've got it right for the most part. The two trickiest parts will be the front sight and the MSH. Is your pistol a standard Govt Model or is it a National Match? If it is a National Match the front sight was probably thicker and the MSH will not have a lanyard loop. Other than that the parts will be the same between a GM and a NM. If you would like to email me for more details I may be able to help.

Oop, sorry. If it is a NM the rear sight will be different too. It will be a Patridge meaning it will have a square notch.
