I went to the gun shop today a saw a Colt New Service revolver in the gun case. The store owner said it was made in the late 1800`s and has about 75% of it`s blueing left.It has stag grips(I don`t know if it is real stag or not)and it says Canadian Mounty Police or something like that on the back strap. The shop owner said you can fire 45LC out of it as well.It also says 45 Colt on top of the barrell over the 455 Eley on the barrel.I just want to know a ball park value on this gun.He wants $400 and that don`t sound bad to me.Thanks in advance.

Well I bought it.The grips are real stag and look to be around 75 years old.I would say that it has about 60% of the blueing left not 75% as I stated before. The serial # is 61024.

I don't know about 45LC/455 Eley interchangability, but the New Service is a fine piece of Colt history. I have a M1917 New Service in 45ACP that is original. From what I've seen of current prices, yours sounds about right.

There is no interchangeability between .455 Eley and .45 Colt; the Colt round is nearly twice as long as .455 and its rim is thicker. It sounds like it was rechambered and the caliber restamped. Try a .45 "Long" Colt to be sure. According to the only reference I could find, a Mountie gun would be marked with initials, N.W.M.P., R.N.W.M.P., R.C.M.P., or just M.P. The Mounties only bought about 2000 New Services in both .455 and .45 over a 40 year period. To have any added value a Mountie gun would have to be exacty right and thoroughly checked out. Yours was made after 1905. I suspect it was made before WW I but can't be sure.

I had a S&W that had been converted from .455 to .45. Crudely done or I would still have it.

Yes it fires 45 long Colt.It must of been rechambered by the Mounties. It does have the correct stampping on the backstrap. Thanks for all your help.
