It depends on what you want the finish to look like. I've blued over parkerizing and it just makes it black parkerizing. If you want a polished or matte finish, you'll have to remove the park and polish the metal before blueing.

Thanks Dave! You answered my question. I definitley want a polished blue, and not black parkerizing.

Now, how do I remove the parkerized finish?

Polish it off. Parkerizing etches the metal so you're going to have to polish the metal smooth anyway. Start with something like 220 grit emery cloth and work your way progressively to finer grits and finish with wet and dry paper to the level of polish you want. There is info on doing this here in the "Finishes" forum.

Dave,
Thanks again! I'll have to gather some supplies and then get to work.
I'll try to post some before and after pics.

Glass Bead Blasting?

Would it be possible to glass bead blast instead of doing the hand work to get the finish off? I had a S.S. Colt I had glass bead blasted and it came out great.

Sure, you can bead blast instead of polishing. You just need bare, clean steel in order to blue it.

But it will still be matte, not polished. There's no point in bead-blasting if you need a polished blue.
