Carbona/charcoal blue questions

I found the earlier excerpt about how charcoal blue was done at the factory, but I am curious, how does carbona blue differ from ordinary temper color? It looks like the temperatures are about the same. If early 1911s were carbona blued, then the steels used then must have been OK with it; how about modern parts from Caspian and others? Are any modern 1911 parts hardened enough that 550-650F would draw the temper?

I'm not sure about the temperature used for carbonia blueing but the color is not just due to the temperature. It is much darker and deeper than the blue obtained from heat treating. Carbonia works fine on modern carbon steel firearms. Colt is using this finish on their WWI replica 1911s. This finish takes more time and costs more than black oxide, which are some of the reasons it's not used more often.

Thanks. I haven't gotten to handle any of the new WWIs, but the photos sure look good. Can you imagine that blue over a matchless finish?
