| Hard Chroming a Militec1-treated pistol?
I have a carbon-steel 1911 which will be sent off to a highly reputable gunsmith soon for a little work and refinishing with hard chrome. Recently I started using militec1 for lubrication on that particular gun. I applied it twice so far using the "heat-gun" technique and the gun has been treated for about 6 months. It has seen very little use and spends most of its days in the safe. The rep at Militec1 told me that the lube penetrates and bonds to the metal to a depth of 3-5 microns. Normal bead blasting will remove the lube from the blasted parts but I'm concerned about the smaller parts, barrel, and bushing which would probably not be blasted prior to hard chroming. The rep was not too sure on how to completely remove the product other than blasting. The gunsmith said that guns go through over 12 different prep/cleaning steps before plating and didn't seem too worried about adhesion of the hard chrome. However, he admitted he didn't have much experience with Militec1. He didn't seem worried, though. I'm just a little bit weary and would like to know if anyone has had a Militec1 gun plated or if any professional smiths have plated a gun previously treated with Militec1. Thanks |

| Hard Chrome
Sorry to tell you this, but Mil-Tech is just oil. Better than some, worse than others. I'm sure that your hard-chromer can take care of it in his prep. If not, pick a differnt chromer. I would recommend Tripp Research.
