| Can gold TiN be polished?
I have been reading this board for a while and have come to respect the expertise of the group. I have a problem that you may be able to help me solve. I'm interested in making a highly polished gold colored cylinder, grip frame and other small parts. If I have them coated in gold TiN, which will be much more durable than gold plate, can they highly polished? Is there anybody who routinely does this kind of work? Thank you for your advice. Bruce |

Check out the Desert Eagles they have a Gold colored titanium pistol thats polished pretty shiney they also have a gold plated one. I've seen the high polished titanium one and it looks pretty good so it can be done no idea how or if it would be any different than polishing anything else

I don't know about TiN specifically, but all other gun finishes I know of (except spray coatings) the polish before the bluing or plating is what controls the shine of the final product. If you want a shiny gold gun, it should be a shiny silver gun before the TiN goes on.

| Desert Eagle
Good point about the Desert Eagle. Their web site calls that finish 'Titanium Gold' but has no technical details and does not offer it as a custom finish on any other gun or parts than pre-owned DE's. It offers hope, though, that I can find what I'm looking for. The point about polishing is interesting, too. Can we verify this from actual experience with TiN? Thanks for the input. I hope we can flesh this out and I can proceed. Any suggestions for a vendor? |

| POLISHING TiALN? No, Not to my knowledge, however...
No, it cannot be polished to my knowledge. However, it is a conformal coating meaning it conforms to the surface finish of the substrate (i.e., coated material). So if you have highly polished flats on your slide they will remain highly polished when coated. If you have a coarse finish on the top of the slide it will remain that way as well.

| Now I need a shop that can do the work. Help, please?
Good evening folks, I've found the Chief that I want to do this finish to, and am ready to go ahead with the project, but am having trouble finding anybody who advertises that they do the coating. I would greatly appreciate a referral to a shop that will do this. Thank you. Bruce |

If you want a polished look, you should polish the underlying metal. TiN adheres best to about an 8 micron finish on carbon steels, and is only a few molecules thick, so you cannot really polish it without removing it.

| Direct to BryCoat
I've had to go directly to BryCoat since AP&W says they no longer offer TiN. The cylinder is already highly polished and the hammer and trigger are 'engine turned'; those are the only parts needing TiN to make this two tone presentation pistol look special. I've sent off a request to see if they will accept non-FFL parts from an individual. |

Decided to do a Montado and save the Chief for another day. Got the parts back today from APW - good folks to deal with. Gold TiN on highly polished stainless steel Ruger parts for a bi-tone revolver - didn't end up using the engine turned parts. It came out somewhere between semi-matte and matte on the polished surfaces. Interesting experiment... Last edited by Bruce in WV; 01-30-2010 at 04:31 PM. |

they should have been able to do a high gloss finish... maybe the deposition temp was too low on the parts...
