Question Clear / Transparent Gun Finish?

Hi,

I’m considering dong a custom 1911 using a Caspian Damascus slide. Do any of you know if there is a clear / transparent gun finish that can be used on the entire slide to add protection and reduce friction while leaving the beautiful Damascus steel visible?

Thanks,
~ evenstill

Hey
You might try Duracoat clear. Used it a few times, and has protected well. Might have an issue with the final sheen overtaking the Damascus look, so I would talk to the guys there and try it on something else. (very good to talk to)
Hope it helps

Welcome to the Forum, evenstill. IMHO, you may have a problem finding a finish that will hold up. I say that because the clearcoat that S&W uses on weapons like the 642, are prone too lift and peel after time. I'm sure that S&W spent a ton of money in R&D in order to come up with their less than satisfactory coating product. If there was something out there, I think they woulda found it. As the owner of a 642, I am interested in this problem, and have NEVER read of a clearcoat product that could be applied to a stripped 642 as a cure. Some have stripped their 642s of clearcoat, and maintained the weapon with auto wax or Renaissance Wax. That may be a viable option for you, esp since you're only concerned with the slide. I am using Renaissance Wax on my intact clearcoat to prevent it from deterioration. It appears to be working. I'll be watchin' this thread. Good luck, and BE SURE to post pics..........

there are clear anodizing finishes as well. talk to a local plater, see what they can offer. i'm not sure how ideal it may be for your needs, but most of the color for even TiN is added during process.
