| Bluing Question
Hello All, I have two NoDak Spud Uzi receivers that I want to get blued. The price to have the professionally done is quite more than I'm willing to pay, so I'm trying to come up with an alternative. What I am thinking of doing is filling a cylinder with Oxpho Blue and then dipping them. Would this work? Also, would I be able to save the leftover Blue or is it contaminated? Thanks Much! Crowbar |

That would take a LOT of chemical. No, the Oxpho-Blue won't be contaminated as long as the parts being dipped aren't dirty. Be aware, that as good as it is, Oxpho-Blue is still just a cold blue. Cold blues are not very durable and no where near as dark as a hot salts blue job. The finish can usually be literally wiped off with your thumb, and tends to rust easily. Often, due to the chemicals in cold blue, they can actually cause rusting. More "authentic" finishes are to have the parts parkerized, then coated with one of the epoxy paint type finishes. Or you can simply coat with the epoxy, although a bead blasted surface gives the coating a "tooth" to bond to better. These coatings are far more durable and rust proof than even a professional blue job. One thing to look into: Many of the professional bluing services offer a "dip only" service. You send them the parts, polished or otherwise fully prepped, and all they do is run them through the bluing tank system. What it looks like depends on the prep you do. This costs much less than a RE-blue job in which they have to disassemble and polish the parts. Here's some of the top gun re-finishers. You might contact them and ask what a dip-only would cost.
