Electroless Nickel vs. Hard Chrome (which & why)

I have seen factory offerings from two premier handgun manufacturers (SIG & HK) in Electroless Nickel but not Hard Chrome.

It's getting time to refinish my old and faithful P7M8 and I don't know which to use.

Which is better for durability and corrosion resistance? Why?

I went with hardchrome on my P7. The chromed guns that I have seen all have had a blueish tinge to them, while nickel seems to have a yellowish tinge. I think the chrome looks better. From what Ive read its also supposed to be a harder and more durable finish. The durability wasnt a huge concern for me, but was another selling point. Price was thesame between the two so I went with chrome.

Hard Chrome is much more durable than nickel.

Nickel is more corrosion resistant than hard chrome, but hard chrome is still pretty good in that regard.

What about coverage?

Does hard chrome have a hard time getting into the nooks and crannies of guns vs. electroless nickel?

I have a carbon steel gun I'm thinking of having hard chromed, but I don't want the rust devil seeping into the nooks and crannies!!!

What's the solution to this dilemma (i.e. getting full coverage corrosion resistance but having hard chrome durability)?

There isn't one. Hard Chrome adheres to the base metal extremely well, but you can't put it on EVERYTHING without interference with the moving parts. IIRC you can put NP3 on just about everything and it is very corrosion resistant (and slick!), but it is still alot softer than hard chrome. Boron Carbide usually goes on top of chrome, although I understand there is a new application process that might "do it all" (ultra-hard & corrosion resistant), but I don't think it is available yet.

Hard chrome is probably the all-around best option. Better corrosion resistance than most and extra tough. I guess you could look into putting one of those polymer finishes like Black-T over the top of chrome if you are really paranoid, but I don't know how well that works.

I was once told that this was like putting a coat of green paint over a coat of red paint, but I have done it a few times and it worked out rather well...... drum roll please......

Hard chrome over electorless nickel. Gives you electoless nickel's ability to plate in all the nooks and crannies, and its better corrosion resistance, plus the looks and exterior-surface wear of hard chrome. At least one chromer has told me that the chrome sticks better to the nickel. As to what sticks to steel better, I've not seen much of a prob with either. Buildup was never a problem, but then I never did it on a gun with a supertight slide to frame fit. I would say on most guns it might take an almost unnoticeable amount of play out. I haven't done this in a while but would not be afraid to do it again.

Hey, if it worked... just another reason to be glad my gun is stainless.

the only reason to go with electroless is if your gun is aluminum...and in my case, I had ford's hard chrome over the nickel on my aluminum 442....by the way, ford's does excellent work at about 50 bucks less than tripp....

Hi P7newbie,

I ended up going with Hard Chrome from Tripps.

Ray

P.S.: Post some photos of the Smith here and at PCT when you get it back.
