| shooting cast lead in a g30
i'm going to get a G30 four a steal . i reload my own cast lead bullet for my 1911. i allready know about why not to the poly rifling :-? leading problems. do you think it would be worth getting a after market barrel barsto or some high quality so i can shoot lead. does anybody make lead friendly barrels for the G30? under 500 with trijicons an extra mag box and papers, maybe a box of hp ammo, good deal |

A barsto will be fine for shooting lead. I dont shoot lead because of the increased health risks of loading and shoting it.

I would refrain from shooting any lead, even the hard cast stuff in a Glock barrel. Go with an aftermarket for that. I have loaded thousands upon thousands of jacketed bullets and run them through my Glocks with no negative effects. The minimal increase in component costs of jacketed (or plated) over lead is worth the peace of mind to me. Just a suggestion, but lots of folks a lot smarter than me think that shooting lead through a Glock barrel ain't a good idea. |

"Minimal cost of jacketed over lead"? What rock have you been hiding under? Average cost of 1k jacketed is $82, vs. 1k lead at $40. Precision black's are around $60. But he's right, change the barrel. |

I copied this from another post I'd put in the "Reloading" section: "As far as the original question about shooting lead in a Glock, I recently went to armorers school. That question was asked. Per the Glock instructors, "Glock authorizes the use of commercial lead ammunition in all of the Glock line of weapons". "NO RELOADED AMMUNITION IS AUTHORIZED IN ANY GLOCK WEAPONS, AND THE USE OF SUCH VOIDS THE WARRANTY". Does anyone know of ANY manufactorer that will warranty their weapon against "Joe Blow's" reloads??? " "I can tell you from personal experience, the 40 cal doesn't withstand ANY leading! No matter what Glock says! I've tried it. I've changed out the barrels and currently am able to fire about 600 rounds before the barrel pressure starts climbing. With the stock Glock barrel, cut that number down to about 150! Otherwise, myself and several others have fired thousands of 9mms and 45s throught the factory barrels with NO problems at all associated with leading. But with the 40 cal, I'd change the barrel......or scrub it after every 100 rounds of lead." The only problems we ever experienced (told about) with the G 30 was that it was very "finiky" about the type ammo it was fed. I'd heard several in the local PD say that their G30 wouldn't feed anything but 230 ball. I've had several out here at the house, and fed them a steady diet of 200 SWCs with zero problems. I'd heard about this problem sooooo much, I wanted to see for myself. Mag after mag, it just ate every 200 SWC we fed it! ALL LEAD! As I said earlier, I've never had a problem with the 9mm or 45acp leading. Use caution with the 40 cal. I'd change the barrel in a 40cal. I get lead for about $30k. No shipping cost. I have a supplier in the state and drive to pick it up. Cost effective thinking, I can't afford jacketed over lead at that price. IF........I could afford jacketed, I'd probably shoot it.........in anything other than the 45acp. I've found that the lead 200 SWC is the most accurate load I've found. Why change it? |

I have run over 30,000 hard cast lead bullets through my .40 Glocks, 22 and 24L with no problems. My practice load is a 155 swc lead bullet at 980 fps (22) and 1000 fps (24L). I clean the barrels every five hundred rounds or so. I have found no excessive leading or indications of excessive pressure. I polygonal barrels won't shoot lead bullets, why weren't shooters complaining about the H&K P9 twenty years ago?

I don't shoot my Glocks very much anymore, but I use lead, too. Stock barrels just need to be cleaned more often to avoid build-up. (yes Tommy I have three ops: )Robert Konrady, a USPSA Master Shooter, has shot over 150,000 lead bullets (as of last Oct.) through his Glock 21! We have several masters and a few A and B shooters that shoot a high volume of lead through their Glocks. If you are uncomfortable or unsure...shoot a few and check your bore. Repeat the process throughout your range session. If there is a problem, and there won't be, stop shooting and clean. I have gotten to the point that I shoot lead or moly in everything. Buddy |

Read that at least some Glocks will fire when just slightly out of battery. Tried it w/mine (empty) and it seemed so. Normally this would never cause a problem, but if a case head happened to be just enough oversize and weakened from too many reloads or whatever, this could possibly cause a Kb.

I have witnessed that. Was R.O.-ing a local shooter (Dwight Courts) shooting a G35 and during his course of fire he had a round that sounded "funny" and was immediately folowed by him crying out. Gun appeared fine and he finished the course, but after the "unload and show clear" there was unusual powder residue on the frame of his gun as well a square burn/char mark on the topside of his trigger finger the exact dimensions of the opening the trigger passes through in the frame. Only conclusion any of us could reach, as well as our resident Glock jockey Jim Yates, is he had expierenced a slightly out of battery detonation. Right now I'm about 99% sure he was shooting lead, but I'll have to ask around a bit to be positive. |

In reference to shooting lead, I've read-been told by very experienced reloaders-and have seen with my own eyes, that when you push lead over 1000 fps, it is GOING to start leading the barrel. So, having said that, if you shoot a light enough bullet and have to push it over 1000 fps to make "major" power factor, you'd better be careful and check the bore after about 100-150 rounds. I'm loading a 180 gr lead at just under 1000 fps and they start leading real quick in the 40 cal! Glocks shooting out of battery???? I've check every on that I own, and since hearing of this problem, have checked each one that I've come into contact with. I COULDN'T make any one of them fire when the barrel was "slightly" dropped out of battery. The slide had to be all the way forward with the barrel locked up before the weapon would fire. IF you have one that will, you probably need to get it to a Glock armorer and get it inspected! Just a note...............while in the Glock Armorer School, this "possibility" was discussed. The general cause of this problem was attributed to the "weekend warrior" armed with a dremel tool and aftermarket parts, if memory serves me correctly. |
