which to get, "Mild" custom or semi-custom?

Ok,
So I started the new job and have some extra "funds". I'm torn as to which would be a better "bang for the buck". Should I send in my Colt (or SA) to someone like Ted Yost, Chuck Rogers or Dave Berryhill for some "mild" custom work ala the 1* package, "simple 1991A1" or "Basic Carry". Or should I go for something like a RRA or a Ed Brown Kobra. As for the "factory" guns, is the Kobra worth the extra $700+ over the RRA?

Thanks
Rich

Some quick questions up front:

What's it for?

Do you like the snakeskin frontstrap?

Have you looked at Les Baer?

Are you looking for a custom gun or just a good preformer?

Oh Yeah,
Well, it's for safe queen/range queen/IDPA. Really no option for CCW (at least not until I leave MD). I do like the looks of the snakeskin front strap. I'm looking for first and foremost a great performer. I've sort of "dismissed" Les Baer after hearing a bunch of stories of poor customer service etc. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Rich

From my personal experience I can tell you that having some light custom work done by a good gunsmith will result in a nicer pistol than getting a semi custom from a manufacturer.

Granted this is just my opinion and you have to deal with shipping your pistol and waiting through the gunsmith's backlog, but I really believe it's worth the time and trouble.

Just my humble opinion of course, but since this isn't a carry
piece, and there is no rush for it, why not make the investment
of a top-notch quality full custom? It is an investment if you
have a top drawer builder, think of what Nastoff guns, or other
gentlemen of that order cost then and are worth now.....
Granted, the scratch building that these folks did and hand
fitting are what makes them the best. But I happen to know
that a few builders just happen to frequent this site, and I
doubt you'll find a classier group of characters anywhere.
Readers Digest version: Buy Custom, be happy.
