| Opinions on next builds
OK, I am stuck for what to build next. I bought a multitude of frames and receivers up to and after the obama election. Among them 4 Caspian single stack full size 1911 frames. I already have 4 Springfield 45s (SS Champion, Original Mil Spec Operator, 2 Mil Specs for customizing later), so I am looking for some different ideas. Already near finished with a 9x23 5", and a 40 Super 6". Anyone have any thoughts/ideas for the next build? Oh I am shying away from 10mm as I already have 6 S&Ws. |

What You have goin' so far pretty much covers all that needs coverin'.....I like 10 mms but the large primer combined with extended ejectors can be dangerous, I've never had it happen but I've heard horror tales of loaded rounds firein' while ejectin' the said loaded rounds. An extra 9x19 barrel for the 9x23 covers the .355/357 arena good as I can see it bein' covered 40 Super is the "HOSS".....180grain bullets in the Super case will outrun the 170grain bullets from a 41 S&W Mag. Big plus for Me is I handle the recoil from a 1911 way better than the recoil from a model 29 or model 57 May be time to start "wildcattin" at this point. 9x23 can be necked to .17...Hell to make run but can be done. 224 Zipperer is the 9x23 necked to .224.....Neck the 9x23 to .308 for the hottest .30 ever....neck the 9x23 to .32 and leave the .32 Magnum suckin' "HIND TIT", Most of these will require sleeved barrels, Bar Sto made Me .224 barrels years back Gunnar Christian (sp) used to post on here ( i'm sure a search on here will turn up contact info ) Gunnar has "Wildcatted" the 1911 as much or more than I have...His 45/08 is a HOSS....Since You already have The 45 slide You can base a lot off the .270/.308/30.06/ cases Just a few ideas, may be something factory that is easier, if so I'm missin' it but that is a common occurrence with Me Bill Caldwell |

Build Master Grade Pistols with the caspian frames/slides in 40 Super. Build a matching 9x23 and a .45 with the Springfields, duty carry. Hardchrome them, and sell as a set.

Hmm..... Bill: I have several friends with either factory 10mm 1911's or builds/converts. I have never personally seen, or heard of the extended ejector setting off rounds, not to say it has not happened though. I have always favored the S&W 3rd gens for the 10mm, just personal preference. The .224 zipper sounds interesting, although a google search could not turn up anything on it readily, have any additional info on it? Possibly who is making dies and reamers? Some general stuff like velocity and so forth would help the enticement as well. JH: All very nice ideas, but I have this disease called Gun Hoarding, I am sure it is in some obscure medical journal somewhere. I just can't seem to let a gun I build for myself go, ever. Couple that with my idea that you can never have to many guns and well.......... time to buy another safe |

AF Fal, Nothin' wrong with the Smith 10MMs, it's just that I know the 1911s, BETTER than I'll ever know the Smith so I only play with other pistols when there 're no 1911s around....So far there 's been enough 1911s. Long time back, and it was a long time back I worked with the Smith 39 and 59, We made screw in barrel bushin's, got them accurate, could never get a trigger pull like the 1911....Maybe if we'd worked with them one day longer ???? I covered the .224 Zipperer on Pistolsmith...Save Me some typin', Seee Wild Bill Caldwell Veiw from the Hills on this forum, possibly page 3 and 4....Early on I worked with 40 gr, Hornet bullets, Ran up over 2500fps. Later used 30gr. Bergers at 2400fps...Also there was a write up in the Handgunner, I think Sept, Oct 2005 issue...At one time I had a foot in the door with Winchester, (or thought I did), Some there were interested, some thought It was much better than the FN 5n7 or what ever the FN was....Looks like now , at this point in Time it is a dead dog on the side of the road.......I have a Remmy short , small action layin' around, I intend buildin' a switch barrel varmit setup , I'd like to work with the .224 Zipperer as a varmit rd....It will out step the Hornet in the same length rifle barrel. Biggest problem is the neck is to short to hold boattail bullets with thse proper grip Bill Caldwell |

Now concernin' the possibility of the ejector hittin' the large primer on a 10mm and settin' the rd off.....Oregon bullets, hope I'm rememberin' the name right used to publish a loadin' manual for their cast bullets...in the 10mm section this was covered With that said I was at the Dallas Gun show( TEX) years back.....This discussion came up, I ran up the B.S. flag, A Texicano Hand quitely left the table, returned 20 mnutes later with a Man, standin' across from My table said" Show Him You Hand"...It was easy to see the palm had been tore to "HELL" fairly recent, looked like it was healin' but still nasty. Story I was told , "I was ejectin' the rd in a match , had pinched grip the rear of the slide with My left hand Thumb and first finger, My palm was coverin' the ejection port ,as I started rackin' the slide the rd fired( and from what I seen the rd was out of the chamber ) This is the result". Later tests here in my shop proved this can happen Bill Caldwell |

Bill, I've seen that happen with .45 acp 1911s when an extended ejector was being used. In my mind it's certainly a little more likely with a 10mm due to the smaller diameter of the case. Bottom line to me is, don't cover the ejection port when extracting loaded rounds. |

Early on shootin' 1911 45s I would hold the pistol in My right hand, rack the slide with My hand over the ejection port, later as matches grew more organized, R O s didn't like that style of unload and show clear at all......It was a DUMBA$$ habit that took a long time to break for good. No doubt God was watchin' out for Me, Probably tellin' some of His angels, "He's gonna kill Himself Drinkin' , Fightin', and Honky tonkin', Might as well let Him leave here with a good hand Bill Caldwell |
