| Taurus 24/7 OSS .40 problem
Hey guys! Since there is no Taurus section (insert joke about Taurus here) I figured I would ask this question here. I sent my 24/7 OSS back to Taurus because the slide and breech end of the barrel were impacting each other and causing the damage that you can see in the pics. Taurus replaced the barrel, slide assembly and captive recoil spring. After receiving it, I cleaned it and took it to the range. My first two mags (30 rounds) were good. The sights needed adjusted but that was expected as the entire slide is new. I reloaded and shot 30 more rounds. I was all over the paper! I field stripped the gun to inspect it. The pictures below show what I found. Needless to say, Taurus has the gun again. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before in a poly framed gun? What causes it and how is it fixed? I feel I need to share, with Taurus, any repair info I can dig up or they are just gonna replace the top half of the gun again and send it back to me. Photos here: Taurus 24-7 OSS pictures by black2000tj - Photobucket These pics were taken before sending the gun back for the 2nd time for this problem. The damage was much much worse the first time I sent it back. |

I've never seen a Taurus 24/7 oss ( seems like I'm sayin' that a lot lately) where the Hell Yaw'll getin' these Pistols I've never heard of...With that said , I have seen a few of the copies of the 1911 by Taurus runnin' in USPSA matches , I don't care for the Hammer Lock but it should be easy to replace the hammer, They seem to be reliable and worth what there goin' price is Wild Bill |

Bill, The Taurus 24/7 line has five or six models in 9mm, .40 and .45. Like most Taurus guns, they are knockoffs of other pistols such as the Springfield XD/XDm and other polymer framed pistols. They have been around for about 10 years now, maybe more. They are not 1911 style. No hammer. |

my buddies and i have owned a few of the newer taurus auto's and i seen a few that didn't seem very accurate, but all of them have cycled ammo very well. one friend has a pt111,9mm that he loves. it shoots great and feels good in my hand. i have a 709slim 9mm now,its a little stiff on recoil, but it very small so it can be expected i guess. great cary gun.

I have the exact same problem with my 24/7 OSS in 9mm. I sent the gun back for excessive head space and poor accuracy issues in Feb. 2011. The fired cases were showing nail head primers with +P ammo and 5" groups at 25 yds. The returned the gun with a new barrel and recoil spring. Within 30 rounds the slide the barrel were impacting each other with the results as shown in the above thread to the point that the edge of the slide was peened over by the front edge of the barrel causing the slide to be held back in recoil making the gun inoperable. I sent it back again. It was returned with a new slide and the second barrel. Right out of the box I could see that their test firing had already caused the barrel to slide inteference and the edge of the barrel and slide were already deformed by their 24 test rounds. I called customer service and was treated very badly--saying how do you know there is a problem. There appears to be a bunch of incompetents in the service group as well as an inherent design issue with this gun! It has been sent back again and I have emailed the company president for help.

I'm no expert by far, but I own 2 Taurus pistols, yeah there no glock, but it's not a trashy low budget gun either. The gun I had the longest is my PT 24/7 .45 acp, I bought it a couple months after it came out, unlike what you can buy now, it's just a 24/7 which you can't find any more, no Pro after the 24/7, or OSS. It's a DAO, not the DA/SA like the pro and oss. I have never messed with the sites, and I shoot with a friend of mine who is a Marine and has been deployed twice to Iraq and seen action. He has a para ordinance and a kimbler, not sure the modles I think the para might be a warthog something like that, in .45 and the kimbler is a .40. My point my gun was a lot cheaper then either one of his, and I out shoot him every time we go out. Some times to his frustration that he'll offer me the chance to use one of his guns about half way through. To me that says a lot for the gun, that and in 2005 the 24/7 won the NRA handgun of the year. I also have a PT 738 .380 as a pocket pistol, and I haven't shot it much yet, but the rounds I put through it all popped when I pulled the trigger. People look down on Taurus, but if the company is only known for knock offs, explain why their revolver "The Judge" 410gauge/45lc, not only has been a good seller, but a company with a the name and background as Smith & Wesson just came out with a revolver called "The Governor" which is a 410gauge/45lc, knock off of the Judge. Some thing new to look out for from Taurus is a cross between their raging bull and the judge, that is named the "Raging Judge" (yes I'm serious) it is a revolver that will shoot a 28 gauge shotgun cartridge and will take a .55 cal slug, so I'm guessing if it sells we'll see some new rounds on the market. There's good and bad in everything, and I just want people to know Taurus is more than a poor man's glock. Hey Saiga, the fact that your friend "is a Marine and has been deployed twice to Iraq and seen action" doesn't make him a great handgun shooter. In the military, there are different levels of competence awarded by qualification with the particular weapon issued to the trooper. They are "Expert", "Sharpshooter", and "Marksman" in descending order. Even if he shot Expert with his "issue sidearm" (IF he was even issued one, it was probably a 9mm Beretta) it would not make him an Expert level shooter with his Para or Kimber. So when you "outshoot him every time" (whatever that means), it has no relationship to the quality of his weapons vs your Taurus. All it means is that on any particular day, you shot your weapon better than he was able to shoot his Para or Kimber. With regard to a Taurus NOT being a "trashy, low-budget gun", keep drinkin' the Kool-Aide...........

I'm not going to debate something with someone who has more information then me. I know about the different shooting levels, my granddad served as a paratrooper, so I heard everything he did 600 times. When I was in highschool I seen a friend get shot with a rusty .38 I wouldn't gave $10 for, fall to the ground from 1 round, and chock on his blood and die, and another take 7 .45 rounds, from a brand new Sig, and walk way with a shit bag, but other then that you wouldn't know he ever hurt. All I'm saying is trashy knock off, or super modified Glock, as long as it fires it can kill. I don't see the point of backing one gun and trashing another, because no one makes a gun that guarantee's to kill 100% of the time.

Hopefully, you were VERY respectful to your grandfather. If it were not for veterans like him, we'd be typin' in German or Japanese..........

I never had a dad around, so my granddad was the closest thing I had. He over looked my uncles and old cousins, and made it known that I have say in the family in his place. For him to show me that much respect, should show the respect I showed him. I said I heard his stories 600 times, that's because I stayed and listened 600 times. I have no problem showing respect, but getting it in return comes harder. People look at most of my generation as unpatriotic, for the most part it's true, but I vote, I liked W. Bush and hate hearing people complain about terrorist profiling, Right or wrong I don't care much for muslims, I don't think they care about what happened, except for the fact we attack them back, which I think they though we were just a paper tiger. I would have rather seen McCain then Obama in office. I think Obama is anti-American, an under cover muslim who was pushed into office by people who want to see America fail, but they over estimated his ability and in stead of fully sinking American, we are in a limbo til his term is up. I have a No-bama clock that counts down til he's out of office, I have no problem with the color of his skin, but with his religion. We are a Christan founded nation, and the religion I believe he practices wants for the death of all Christans. If they want to come on our land I have no problem fighting them in our streets, and by them I mean stranger, friend or brother, if their not for us their against us. Some people might not like my opinions or think I'm wrong for how I feel. However my granddad and you, and a lot of other people, earned the right for me to speak my mind with out persecution. Trust me, my opinions don't make me popular with a lot of people my age, but I feel my opinions are educated and valid, and I'm not just going to follow the crowd when it comes to my country's future. Sorry for going on a rant, but because of my age I get treated like the majority and prejudged by a lot of people, when if they would talk to me, they would see I share a lot of their own feelings, and could use the knowledge and tips and they gained to make them better fighters and protectors of our country, so I could carry the torch on.

Well Saiga, you seem like a fine young man to me and a credit to your Grandfather and the rest of your family. I'm glad that you are a Forum member, youngsters are the lifeblood of the sport. I hope that you have joined the NRA. At your age you should consider a Life Membership. I know that money is tight, but if you can swing it, it will be a good investment. If I can ever be of assistance to you, feel free to ask. Best wishes, one eye joe

Thanks One Eyed Joe, it's appreciated. Unfortunately I'm not an NRA, I really wish I could. Especially a life member, but I can't afford it. Right now at this point in my life I can't even afford the 1 year membership. It sounds like an excuse, but I'm on SSI/Disability for a handful of reasons. I get around $600 a month, and prices of everything keeps going up, I'm lucky if I can buy food everyday. Me and my mom was sharing an apartment to save us both money, and she just had went through a bad divorce from my "step dad". So us sharing a place just worked, but my mom got laid off from her job, she was working for the red cross, and they shut her center down. So the money I get has to take care of both of us. We live in a run down steel town in the rust belt, even getting a job at mcdonald's is tough. Because of all of this there is a lot of drugs, and crime. About 2 weeks ago, at a party 1 guy pulled out a gun and shot the other gun in the head, because he stole drugs from him, and after he shot and killed the guy, he took out another gun and killed him self. 15 years ago it would have been almost unheard of, now it's just news and not given much thought. It's messed up, my mom hates guns, but was happy when I got one. Because it's at least some chance for defense. Wild Bill, as outlandish we could loss our country in such a way, the really sad part it's true. Worse off all under this administration anyway they have more rights then we do. We've become a country of help the minority, and screw the majority. Our money says in God we trust, not praise alla, but you would almost not know it any more. They always say well your ancestor came here, but I'm pretty damn sure mine didn't sneak through the desert in the middle of the night, illegally cross the border and not ask for government permission, or hide out so the government didn't know they were here. It's a shame. |
