| If you only could have 3 guns in Mexico
I am thinking about buying property in Mexico and living there in winters when its nasty in Oregon. Looking into the possibility of LEAGALLY owning a rifle and shotgun and pistol. Assault weapons and pistols greater than .38 special need not apply. So much for the 3 gun match guns! so how about a diamondback 4 inch .38 special, a 870 pump with 26 barrel and choke, and a .270 Winchester in Steyr professional? Apparently no .308,3006, Magnums, or 7mms or .223 allowed. Then I pay the local chief of police and be cool. Hell ,$1000 a year is cheap to get some respect! What would you guys take? PS: the .38 super I had been carring when I go for the last 30 years is a forbidden caliber contrary to popular opinion :-?

Gordon, There is no payment to the local chief of police, you send a form to the SEDENA (Secretary of Defense Office) and get permission to import your weapons. This cost about $250 per weapon (I don't remember the exact amount) and is a one time fee. When you receive the importation permit, you have 30 days to import the weapon and declare it at the port of entry listed on your permission. You must then bring it to the local army base for registration and you are done. Once you are registered, you are done except for transportation. A seperate permit must be obtained from SEDENA for transportation on highways or to other states. THIS IS NOT A LICENSE TO CARRY. The LTC is extremely difficult to get and would also be handled through the SEDENA. This usually only happens if you have some powerful political connections. Local officials cannot normally help as all this is approved in Mexico City. Best of Luck. I lived in Mexico seven years and had a law enforcement affiliation. Send me an e-mail off-line with contact information and we can talk on the phone if you want more information. |

| Thanks Ray
Well I contacted embassy and have applications coming my wife is a holder of official Mexican citizenship (for property ownership purposes) although she is a born in the U.S. citizen. She had to pay big for the official papers from Mexico. Anyway I think I will use TJ as point of entry and put guns in her fathers safe there until I transport to the southern boonies later. Interestingly the consulate said it was probably easier for me to get permits than her. Also all weapons must be sporting or target and were subject to caliber restrictions ect. Ok. now leaning toward a used 870 wood stock and ventile rib. Would hold lots of Aquila mini shells and hold off AKs within 50 yards, A tack driver with magizines like my Steyr (would like switch barrel) in non military Aquila available caliber for shooting ak wielders at 50Yds + , and an acurrate .38 special to carry on mi rancho. Hey I heard the transport permits are the ones you can smooth out with dinero, your carrying your pistol to the rannge under your seat or in its waist pack right? I wonder is a target .38 super would cut the beaucratic mustard if I had it marked .38 acp? |
