I wanted to purchase a pistol chambered for 9mm to take advantage of the cheap ammo prices that are afforded to anyone that lives near a wallyworld. In addition to that, I shoot mostly my own relaods and I wanted a pistol that I could take to the range and NOT have to pick up my range brass. In essence, I wanted a fun target pistol that I could blow and go with.
After some research I narrowed my search down to two pistols: a Glock 19 or a CZ something (75B, PCR,...it didn't really matter to me at the time). With this in mind I stoped by my local gun shop and handled a G19, a CZ75BD and a CZ P01. After weighing the price vs. fit vs. trigger pull vs. ergonomics vs., well you get the idea, I chose the P01. I have only heard/read good things regarding the CZ line of pistols and I read that the P01 is one of their latest offerings so I took the plunge and purchased it for $425. Not too bad, I thought. After cleaning it up and taking it to the range a couple of times, here is what I found:
1. Reliability - No jams or feeding problems at all. Perfect operation with Win Bulk pack, CCI Blazer and Speer Gold Dots. Not too bad.
2. Accuracy - I am no bullseye shooter but I was able to routinely produce sub 1" groups at 7-10 yards and could keep 10 shot strings within the 8 ring (many within the 9 and 10 ring) at 15 yards all day long.
3. Trigger - Although the single action trigger pull was relatively light (~5 lbs.) it suffered from a bit of creep before it let off. To correct this I was able to dab some flitz near the bar that releases the hammer (Is this the sear? I'm no gunsmith but I could tell from looking at the operation of the trigger that this part was responsible for the creep that I felt) and dry fired it 10-20 times and now the creap is COMPLETELY gone. It is a nice, crisp 5 lbs trigger pull with no creep. I think the double action pull is too heavy for my taste, but it is smooth.
4. Ergonomics - Let me just write this; I almost bought the G19 but this damned CZ felt like it was custom made for my hand. I kept going back to it and the Glock and realized that the CZ fit better. Period. I really thought I would leave with the Glock, initially, so ergonomics played no small part in my purchasing the CZ over the Glock.
5. Price - For just over $400.00 I would consider this to be a bargain at twice the price (well, 1.256 times the price maybe).
Overall I would rate this one of the best pistols, for the money, that I own and I own everything from Kimbers to Glocks to Walthers to Rugers to kahr to...get my drift? This purchase has got me all fired up to buy another CZ. Probably the 75B or the 97B.
poof...
