| K_Bar Leather Washers
Folks, does anyone make a 'rebuild kit' of leather washers for my old K-Bar Marine sheath knife? I've thought about trying to make them myself but they all differ in diameter. Looks like as many of these knives are out there, someone ought to be selling a kit to rebuild the handle. Anybody? Zack

ZACK, I don't know, but seems that if you contacted Ontario Cutlery, they might be able to help you out. Otherwise, if there is a saddle shop or good boot maker/repairman around you, it really isn't difficult to cut out a number of circles and punch out the holes for the tang. They don't make the leather washers in graduated sizes when the knives are constructed, but instead stack them all on and tighten down the buttcap to compress them, then use a belt sander or disc sander to put the taper into the assembled handle. The best way is to saturate the leather washers before assembling with a good water/mold resistant sealer, then assemble and shape and add more sealant or silicone to the surface. If you don't treat the leather before assembly, then you only get the surface sealed, and not the flats of the leather washers where moisture tends to get trapped. It really is not difficult to shape the leather handle after assembly. Good luck, Jeffro (Jeff) |
