| .22 LR conversions for 9mm/.38 Super Commander Length
Which Commander length conversions, if any, will work on a 9mm or .38 Super Commander? I am trying to find what will or will not work before buying the Commander. I am thinking of a Colt, Dan Wesson, perhaps Kimber Aegis or Para Ordinance LTC 9mm. On some forums there has been mention of interference with the ejector. If there is interference can the conversion be machined to work? The primary units I am thinking of are Advantage Arms, Marvel and Iver Johnson. Thanks for any information you can offer.

I had to dykem up and cut clearance for ejector but now i , got a 5 inch 22 kimber conversion for my 9mm tac pro . So yes it works and cleared formy 10 mm kimber too , so whichever i got with me it can fit . 22 uses ejector of its own , in slide . I like to do things they say dont work,i guess its the toolmaker in me.

Thanks for the reply. Seems I have a number of questions to which very few have the answers. Glad to hear the Kimber worked for you. I guess whether it works depends upon the unit one selects. Since posting I did come across Pat. Sweeney's soft cover book on the 1911 and it has a chapter on .22 conversions and whether they will work on different models. From it I gather the Marvel will work but there is no mention of the Advantage Arms and Iver Johnson as they came out way after the book was published. Guess when I get the 1911 will order up one of the kits and haul it off to local 1911 guru to evaluate.

I use a Colt 22 conversion kit , same one for 40 yrs , Mine has the floatin' chamber so there is some recoil which I want...I installed a Briley spehrical ring bushin' in Mine an it is accurate an very reliable with certain brands of ammo so I just buy the kind it likes ,no reason the Colt unit won't work on a commander that I can think of tho I've never tried it , mine stays on a fullsize frame ...also have the lower priced Marvel unit ...works good but doesn't feel like a 1911 ....Too lite... so I use the Colt for cheap pratice Wild Bill |

the colt .22 unit works fine on the commander .45 frame, and the internals of the other compacts are the same. it has agap between the rear of the recoil spring tunnel on the slide, and the front of the dustcover on the frame, you can see the recoil spring. it also has a longer slide stroke, which feels funny at first, but is quick to get used to. for the 9 and Super, you will have to cut either the ejector or the slot in the slide a bit, to get clearance for the slide to run past the ejector. Spld uses the same ejector for all 3 calibers, apparently, because it is much thinnner than a normal .45 ejector. b

chop a colt unit to Defender length, put it on an alloy frame, and it "recoils' just like a full sized, steel frame, 9mm, letting you get cheap practice for such a gun. Once you can deliver A class scores at big IPSC and IDPA matches, don't use the .22 unit any more. at such levels of performance, recoil control is a HUGE part of what you are working to attain and the .22's lack of recoil will mess you up.
