| Inconsistent trigger pull
My 1911 trigger pull will not produce a consistent 3 lb pull but will vary from 2 3/4 lb to 3 1/4 lb, some times while rapid shotting, a round will go off without me consciously pulling the trigger, I think, that probably happens at the 2 3/4 lb pull stage, is this normal or is there something I can do to achieve consistency?

Doubles are not normal for a 1911. Have you detail stripped the gun yet? How comfortable are you going to be in doing this work(Diagnostics and fixing the issue/issues) yourself?

What r u shooting? I have heard, but not seen of series 70 guns crudding up to the point they double. Again, never seen it. I would look to hammer/sear engagement,. Sear n disconn(Obviously, but I tend to doubt) bad springs(Which I'd replace if the gun's old enuff anyways), yadda yadda..... I'm starting to think this gun maybe ought to go to a licensed n insured 'Smiff to get it proper. Is it new? Any factory warranty left? |

Besides springs and worn disconnector, check the pins that the sear and hammer rotate on. If the pin holes have been wallered out, that could cause the problem. Trigger drag on frame or magazine. A bur on the sear or hammer. The sear or hammer not riding correctly on the pins (have play). If you are trying to achieve a good trigger pull with used parts, then good luck. New parts (in spec, and not the cheap things either), tight fitting pins, fitting the trigger correctly, have the sear and hammer interfaces at correct angles are some things that can be done. |

You could jusst gut and rebuild the whole jernt, but you'd learn essentially nothing from it. If you take it issue by issue you will figure out what it was, more than likely. I seem to think Kuhnhausen's books and wjkulek's 1911 manual have REALLY good trouble shooting sections that cover this. If you're not comfy handling this by this eve, I'll hit the book shelf when I get home and look it up, but I almost guarantee they're gonna say the same things as posted here.

3 pounds is a very light trigger. I would be very surprised if your finger can tell the difference between 2-3/4 and 3 and 3-1/4 pounds. When you get that light, if the trigger stroke isn't exactly the same every time, you get friction on the side or top or bottom of the trigger pad potentially affecting the perceived pull weight.

+1. I think only some of the most well-tuned trigger fingers could tell the difference there. Maybe guys that shoot bazillions of rounds a year. I'm sure I wouldn't know the difference. Then again, I may have some numbness from soaking my fingers in caustic chemical................ Good to see you, Aguila Blanca. I don't think I've seen you around much in the last few months. |

Just recently went through this with a Kimber Gold. It varied between 4 and 4 1/2 lbs. I checked the sear/disconnecter/hammer fit - all ok. Found some drag on the trigger bow, so I replaced that and re-stoned the trigger track, that fixed the variance. In the process of measuring everything, I did find some pin wear (this gun has 80 - 100 thousand rounds through it) and put a full pin set in as good measure. The pistol is more accurate than I am now. Now if I could just pistolsmith these old eyes.... ProtoType |
