Makarov double fire?

I am new to this so I hope I am doing it right. I have recently acquired a German made Makarov in excellent condition but once in a while it double fires. Can anyone tell me what can cause this and how to fix it? Thanks for your help.

The "usual" in these cases is the sear/hammer is defective or badly gummed up or fouled and the hammer is "jarring off" when the slide closes, OR the action has been altered in an attempt to improve the trigger pull and the job was botched.

I'd try a deep cleaning first. Field strip the pistol and remove the grips.
Spray a gun scrubber type spray into the action to blast any fouling out.
Let dry completely then spray in a good gun lubricant.
NOTE: Careful what you use as a cleaner spray. Some of these guns may have lacquer or paint type finishes that might be damaged or removed by the chemical.

Here's an exploded view of the Makarov:

If a good cleaning doesn't fix it, you'll probably have to see a gunsmith. Diagnosing EXACTLY what the problem is and HOW to correctly repair it is a job for a pro, especially when it's the trigger unit.
In any case, until you get it fixed STOP SHOOTING IT, it's dangerous as-is.
