| Ramps on aluminum frame guns... how to restore & polish?
I have a Kimber CDP Compact which has an aluminum frame. The ramp is getting a little rough and I was wondering about polishing it... is that ok or will I screw up the hardening on the ramp? Or is the ramp hardened? I was thinking about getting the frame hard-chromed; would that give me a long lasting, smooth feed ramp that could be polished without damaging the metal? |

If this helps, I think Clark has a steel insert ramp-you mill out the aluminum and install. I thought about doing this on my Colt Commander, but the anodizing hardens the frame enough, so I just switched to a more rounded ogive cartridge. |

If you are going to put a steel ramp insert, I'd send it to Evolution Gun Works http://www.egw-guns.com/egw.htm. If the frame ramp is damaged, another option is to install a ramped barrel.

If the anodizing is off the ramp it is no longer hardened. Nothing wrong with carefully polishing it up. Hard chrome is one answer but (you risk the frame and you still have a softer material under the chrome and nickle) the insert is the best if done correctly.

Ned Christiansen does a fantastic feed ramp insert as well, I had him do one for me and it was perfect. Andy |
