Colt Detective Special Grips

I have two Dick Specials. One is a second model without the barrel shroud, and one is the third model with a shroud. I would very much like to install Crimson Trace laser grips on these, but CT does not make ones for these specific models.

Has anyone tried to modify any of the available revolver grips to adapt them to either model of Detective special. I am pretty handy with Acraglas, but I don't know which of the catalogued grips - if any - are likely to be adaptable.

Are both post-1966 "stubby" grip frames, or is the older one a long grip frame:

Going on the basis that "anythings possible" you could chop up the laser grip and install the components into a grip made for the Colt.

Modifying a CT grip will be difficult but would possibly be do-able.

The closest grip would probably be a "K" frame S&W round butt CT grip.
That would require epoxy modifications and routing inside to fit it to a Colt.
This would not look very good but could probably be made to work.

You might just wait a year or so.
Colt is introducing the new Colt Cobra stainless steel revolver with a grip pretty much like the short post-1966 grips.
If the Colt takes off, as expected, CT will probably offer a laser grip for it.
That would probably be a drop-on fit for the older models with the short grip

Thank you for the reply. Those are indeed the two grip frames I am trying to outfit.

Your advice makes sense. Especially if Colt does reuse the short grip frame of the the third model. That would be ideal.

In fact, on close examination of the photos you provided, a grip that fit the short frame might just be modifiable to fit the longer one.

You can fit the newer type that overlap on the bottom of the butt to the older long frame type by cutting and sanding the overlap portion off the inside of the grip.

You'd also have to drill the holes for the frame pin to fit.
