4 or 5" barrel in an SP101?

It occurs to me that an SP101 in .357 with a 4 or 5 inch barrel would be a useful thing to have. It would still be light enough to wear as a trail gun, be a nice backup gun for home defense, and with light loads could be used for hunting small game if an adjustable rear sight were fitted.

I tried searching here and other forums, as well as the web in general, but didn't find any mention of such a thing. Does anybody here know if this has been done, and who does it?

thanks

This subject also came up over at the Ruger Forum. Never have seen one done, though. Jim Stroh of Alpha Precision used to have a picture on his site of a Smith J frame with a custom barrel he made with top rib and enclosed ejector rod housing so I would assume he could do a custom barrel on an SP, too. Dave Clements and Ham. Bowen would also be a couple of other places to check.

I tried registering over at rugerforums.com so I could ask there but they're not taking new members right now.

Is there anything unusual about the SP101? Does the barrel simply screw into the frame?

Rebarreling an SP101

There is nothing special about rebarreling an SP 101.
When our glorious Government decreed that we couldn't have revolvers with barrels under 100mm, a friend had to surrender his SP101.
As he missed it we decided to rebarrel a new one with a compliant length barrel.
Pictures of the result are below. Its probably a simpler job than custom barreling an S&W. The shape of this barrel was dictated by making it match his S&W 627 V-comp. The front sight is a standard .300 X 60Deg dovetailed one held in by a detent and spring so it can be changed by depressing the detent through the hole in the muzzle. Not not the one the bullet comes out of the small one above it.

Very handsome.
Now do that on a 6 shot .327 Magnum and put on a better rear sight; S&W J adjustable, maybe.

(New American Handgunner plugs H. Bowen converting Ruger Blackhawk and Single Six, plus S&W M66 to full size .327s. Might give the little round some life.)
