| 45 Colt loads
With finding powder an issue these days what are the best loads you have come up with for the old Colt? I am using only 250 or 255 gr bullets and want something close to 850 or 900 fps. I have used 2400 which I think sucks. 231 which is OK...but not great. And my two favorites to date are Unique...but a pain to load as the Dillion hates it. And surprizingly Bulls Eye...... Knock on wood. I don't get a case detonation with the small powder charges. |

Dane...If you're still following this...you can get what you're lookin' for with 250 grain cast bullets and 8.5-9 grains of Unique. It's a classic .45 Colt load that doesn't top SAAMI spec pressures for the cartridge. If your gun is a Colt or an Italian clone, I'd hold that at 8 grains for about 850 fps from a 4.75 inch barrel. They're not quite as durable as the New Vaqueros, and they'll do much better if the ammo is downloaded a bit. If the gun is an original Blackhawk framed Vaquero...it'll take whatever a Blackhawk will. |
