winchester 1897

Recently aquired this Winchester 1897 shotgun, manufactured in 1901. It's a non-take down model, with a 20" barrel.
It's engraved on the receiver D.P.D. (Detroit Police Department).
For a shotgun that's nearly 110 years old it is in fairly good condition.
Now, it I could only get it to talk!

First shotgun I owned was a single barrel....Around the time I hit 12 years old I helped My uncle make His hay crop and got a 97 pump gun that he'd shot part of the barrel off, (fast way to shorten a barrel), few boxes of shells and very little cash.....That 97 was the perfect "HACKSAW HOLE" shotgun and I put a lot of ducks in the sack with it

Anybody know what a "HACKSAW HOLE" is

What is a hacksaw hole?

I called one of my cousins in law over in Stuttgart, AR and he was clueless. First time I ever asked him a question related to wildfowling that he didn't know.

HACKSAW HOLE.....There is just a few left in My part of the country ,mostly due to the loggin' with the big machinery They have now and clear cuttin'.....Durin' the WPA and CCC days There were a lot of small ponds dug for farmers to water cows in , find one in the middle of a pin oak flat , usually won't be 60 ft. by a 100ft. often smaller , You have to build a very good blind right at the waters edge , a dozen decoys , several sacks of pinoak acorns and if you can blow a call and can shoot and have a short barrel open bore shotgun You can fill a Tow sack full of Greenheads and Pintails........Always take a friend with a full choke gun , be sure to slip a hacksaw in the sack without Him knowin'...When you are putin' the Ducks on the water and He's shot up a couple boxes and ain't got a duck down , hand Him the hacksaw and say , "HERE FIX THAT GUN SO YOU CAN HIT SOMETHING"....Hence the turn HACKSAW HOLE
