Shopping for 1st Sig

I'm looking into picking up my 2nd handgun. My 1st was a S&W SW99C. (9mm) I was at the local gunshop and saw the P229 .40. It caught my eye and felt good. I shopped it around and the best price I could get (w/ nightsights) was $803. I live in Mass and everything gun related over here sky high pricewise, compared to say NH or TX.

I went to SIG's website and also saw the SIG Pro P2340 .40. The dimensions and look all resemble the P229 pretty closely. I shopped the P2340 and can pick one up for $595.

I understand that the 2340 has the polymer frame. How does the 2340 compare to the 229? Would I be better off going for the 2340, or saving the extra 200 bucks and going w/ the 229?

thanks.

1st. Sig

Common,

I can't speak much about the SigPro from first hand experience as I have none. But from what I've read, they don't seem like the top of the line. It seems like SIG brought out something simply to compete in the polymer market. The SIGPRO is what they wound up with. However, they don't really seem to be considered a 'true' pedigree.

In other words, they're have SIG on them and they work, but the preferred pieces are the classic models with the metallic (steel/alloy) frames. SIG does have a good looking Poly gun (X5?) reportedly coming out in the some time in the future.

Bottom line is up too you. $200 is a good holster, belt and pouches, plus maybe a good flashlight or another mag or two.

But if I were planning on keeping this piece for quite while and shooting alot, I'd splurge and go with the 229. One of the best, if not the best, semi-compact service pistols out there. It will hold it's value much better and there are alot more accessories, such as holsters, available for it. In my opinion, it is superior enough over the SIGPRO to warrant the cost difference. However, that's just my opinion.

I would suggest perhaps seeking a gun range that rents pistols and try them both if you can. Pick the one that you prefer most and don't look back.

Stay Safe,
BOSS

I've owned the 2009, 2340 as well as 226, 220, 230 and 225. I found the SiGPros, the 2340 and 2009 everybit as fine as my 226, 225 or 220. They were accurate, reliable, pointed well and had even better triggers. If I hadn't had chances to trade for wheelguns I'd still have them

Well I'm going to agree and disagree with Jim  I find the Classic series SIGs to be much better than the sigpro models in fit and finish. Thats why they are less expensive(aside from the polymer frame).
BUT, the ease of changing Fire Control Units on the pros is a selling point. On a 2340, I changed out the DA/SA fcu to a DA only fcu and polished the pusher bar contact point with the trigger bar and the DA trigger pull was exceptional. Better than any other Classic series SIG I have.
I have several of each series and should I pick one to load up and carry it would be the 2340. That says a lot.

what sig to buy

I have a 225 and a 228.I like the 225 better even though capacity issues. It is 17 years old and it fires like new,it has a more heavier duty feel than my 228. It is barely noticibly shorter in height than my 228 and I like the checkered wrap around grips better than the standard newer frames. Its pointability is great and is very concealable but it still feels lika "fighting" gun and not the "girly man" pocket pistols that a starting to get popular(ex.glock 26,kahrmk9, etc).

What is it FOR?
If for IDPA or IPSC competition, or a lot of casual shooting - a "range gun", get a P226 9mm. It has a longer sight radius and forward balance and shoots cheaper ammo. Look at the ST (all steel model.) Bruce Gray said in Front Sight magazine that shooting one was "like dryfiring with noise."

Well I know this reply is hardly timely since it's been, what, a month since your message was posted but I saw some similarities that just forced me to add my two cents.

My first pistol was also a polymer S&W (but in my case it was a Sigma SW40F) and was looking at a Sig for my second pistol. At the time I was applying for a job with a local police department that had a pretty liberal firearms policy. You could just about carry whatever you wanted within reason, so I set out to get a real "cop gun". The P229 was still pretty new on the market but were all the rave so I went ahead and got one. I've never looked back.

I had to go today and take the course to renew my concealed handgun license and decided to take along the P229 to qualify with. The poor gun hasn't been shot (or cleaned, for that matter) since who knows when, yet it still functioned 100% and allowed me to shoot a near perfect score...damn flyer!

This insn't a knock against the SigPro. I'm sure those are fine guns but I have no real experience with them. I can say, however, that my P229 is just one of those guns that I would not hesitate for a second to defend me or my family. I can't think of any better endorsement for a defensive firearm.

shopping for first sig

You are making a wise choice. You cant go wrong. I have a 225 and 228. They are good choices if you want something compact if you are the 239 are good and a good choice of calibers are available in those models. I suggest the 228 or 226.Sigs in my opinion is the best field/duty/home/self defence handgun available.
