I am in the process of buying my first gun. It will be mostly target. I have pretty much decided on 40 cal. Lately people are telling me to go with a 9. The only two guns that I have fired are a baretta cougar and a glock 22. I really like the baretta, it felt good. People are telling me that I should look at the sigs and H&K as well. I have held a couple of the sigs but not fired any. I saw a couple of used ones and also a new 2340. Some of the prices that I have seen mentioned on this forum seem way low or the prices in mid-michigan are way high. I also saw a used (looked new) baretta 92 for 399.00. Any suggestions on quality , dependability, etc.

Thanks

You can't really go wrong with a SiG or HK, two fine handguns. I prefer the SiGs just because they feel better in my hand. All the guns you've mentioned are good choices.

The advantage to 9mm is that it is far less expensive than 40S&W and that translates into more ammo and thus more practice. I have 9mm, 40S&W, 38, 380, 357Mag, 357SiG, 45LC and even 45acp, but I shoot my 9mm more than all the others combined.
