SW1911 Range Report
I made the 1.5 hr drive to the Academy today to try out the new SW1911. The Range gun was being cleaned, so I had a short wait; browsed around the store.
Really nice & modern facility, and so many interesting models to try out. Wish it was closer to me, like the club I belong to (5 mins.). It appeared this particular SW1911 may have been shot a lot. I was also told, they had tried out the Wilson .22 conversion kit, which worked great. The Store will sell the SW1911 for about $745 (20% off list), when it is Approved in MA. My favorite dealer will be carrying it for <$750, so I expect it will be priced close to the S&W Store tag.
The gun was still nice & tight, but broken-in. The grip safety was very sensitive. Some night sites would have been good on this piece, as the station was a little on the dark side.
The rubber grips were not super comfortable, but those can be changed.
Overall finish was excellent.
Shooting the SW1911 was a lot of fun; shot to POA. Very accurate piece, & the trigger was not bad. I only shot offhand (no rests or elbow bipod).
After I punched out the center of my first target at a defensive distance of 7 yds, I was asked by another shooter if I had shot this before. When I answered no, it was my first time with it, he was surprised. What can I say? I am not the greatest shooter around, by any means, but the SW1911 just handled great & was a natural pointer for me. This was one of my better days at a range. I proceeded to punch targets at 50ft & more at 7yds.
I know I need stronger glasses, as things are getting fuzzy at 50 ft. :-?
After 2 boxes of Carroll reloads 230 gr ball, I’d say this piece is a winner!
I don’t have a .45 now, but will as soon as the SW1911 makes the “Approved” List here in MA. I really enjoy my 9mm’s & .357 mag, but need to round it out with a 1911! 8)
(Off Topic Side Note: If you haven’t got the S&W 2003 catalog yet, get one & check out the Model 647 8 3/8” barrel revolver, .17 Hornady Magnum and of course that Model 500; Cool)
