Re: Number 3 clones?

You got it, Bill.
Uberti makes them with longer cylinders to take .45 Colt and .44-40 instead of .45 S&W for which there is little ammunition available. Except for the long cylinders, the Schofields are pretty close in appearance but the internals are considerably rearranged in the interest of safety for those who cannot quit counting at five. Likewise they also make a reasonable facsimile of the Old Model Russian, complete with hook on trigger guard, and it is available in .44 Russian as well as .45 Colt. See at:
http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/2,135.html

Beretta sells the Laramie which is meant to look like a No 3 New Model Target except for the big cylinder retaining screw on the top strap which was not used on the originals after the Old Model Russian. Beretta now owns Uberti so they probably get the rough parts from them and make up this variation.

All are close enough for the usual image conscious CAS player but are not accurate reproductions of the originals.

Re: Number 3 clones?

And thank goodness they aren't accurate reproductions as the orginals were fragile and hard to fix.
US import laws have mandated some of the changes, durability others and designed others, as Jim mentioned in the hammer safety of the Laramie.

Sad the cyclingders are so long though if you want the gun in 44 Russian. But they were made in 44/40 originally as well as a host of less powerful cartridges. So it isn't that far off.

The early S&W guns were used for some serious target shooting early on. And were very successful at it. The Bisley Target Colt later dominated the sport for years. But be fun to see what a #3 clone would do on paper. If I ever make the jump (may not happen at $1000 wholesale on the Laramie and no 44 Russian) and actually buy one it will be a #3 in 44 Russian. For $1000 you can buy a pair of really, really, nice SAA clones and have change left over for decent leather.

Uberti Schofield and #3 Russian..marketed in the USA by a bunch of brand name folks.
These are from Cimarron's web site.

#3 Russian...which I think looks great!

Berretta Laramie which only comes with an adjustable rear sight and no target front sight.
