I would like some instructions on changing these in my all stainless .38 made in 1986. Also, what is good for freeing up the side plate screws? Thanks!

I strongly recommend the following.

First buy the Jerry Kuhnhausen shop manual on the S&W revolvers.
This was a training aid for new gunsmiths to learn how to do factory level repairs to the S&W's.
It covers EVERYTHING in great depth, from full disassembly, checking all parts and functions, full reassembly, and exactly how to install new parts.
With this, you'll have no problem installing a new rebound slide spring and a trigger.
All this info is how the S&W factory does it. You'll find no jack leg repair methods.

Second, buy a Brownell's Magna-tip screwdriver set. If you don't want a full set, buy the S&W revolver-specific set which is just for the S&W's.
These are real gunsmiths screwdriver bits and are the finest made.
These will prevent damaging the screws. Since the bits are perfect fits in the slots, it pretty well eliminates problems getting the screws out or "dinking up" the slots:

If you ever damage a bit, just email Brownell's and they'll send you a new bit free, and you don't need to return the damaged one.

When installing a new hammer, it's usually a good idea to remove the double action strut from the old hammer and install it in the new hammer. This often eliminates some fitting. the shop manual shows how to do this.
You'll need a 1/16" punch. You can order one from Brownell's or buy one from Sears.
