I want change my fixed rear sight to an adjustable sight. I have been catalog shopping and I am getting confused. Some references are to "BM #1 or LPA or a width (60 degrees x .375) etc.. Is there a cross index that gives both the common name and dovetail dimensions so that I can pick out the right one. The wide point of the fixed sight dovetail is approximately .325. (hard to measure with sight in dovetail).

The BM#1 refers to a BoMar low mount cut in a slide. An LPA is similar to a BoMar but has different dimensions. Your slide has neither and needs to be milled for either of those sights to be installed in a low mount configuration. I believe the BoMar will fit your slide without milling but it will sit very high on the slide and you'll have to replace the front sight with a really tall blade.

Springfield Arms Mil-Spec 1911 rear sight.

I talked to a gunsmith at SA today, and he was a big help. His name is Mr. Williams. It seems that the Mil-Spec dovetail is in a class of it's own . It has a 52 deg. angle and the width is measured over wire gages. In any case he pointed me in the right direction, both Mec-Gar and Pachmyar sell an adjustable rear sight that uses the staked front sight and the Mil-Spec dovetail without any modifications or milling. So my problem is solved. The products are available from Brownells and I'm sure other suppliers. Thanks to all the responders! :D
