I want change my fixed rear sight to an adjustable sight. I have been catalog shopping and I am getting confused. Some references are to "BM #1 or LPA or a width (60 degrees x .375) etc.. Is there a cross index that gives both the common name and dovetail dimensions so that I can pick out the right one. The wide point of the fixed sight dovetail is approximately .325. (hard to measure with sight in dovetail).
Hi Gene, are you wanting to put a Bomar sight on your pistol? exactlty what Springfield Armory model do you have? does it have a "GI spec" (small rear blade) on it? chad
The BM#1 refers to a BoMar low mount cut in a slide. An LPA is similar to a BoMar but has different dimensions. Your slide has neither and needs to be milled for either of those sights to be installed in a low mount configuration. I believe the BoMar will fit your slide without milling but it will sit very high on the slide and you'll have to replace the front sight with a really tall blade.
Dave, thats what I was thinking. I was just wondering if he possibly had a new "loaded" model with a Novak cut. I think once your cut for that Novak theres no going back to anything else? chad
I talked to a gunsmith at SA today, and he was a big help. His name is Mr. Williams. It seems that the Mil-Spec dovetail is in a class of it's own . It has a 52 deg. angle and the width is measured over wire gages. In any case he pointed me in the right direction, both Mec-Gar and Pachmyar sell an adjustable rear sight that uses the staked front sight and the Mil-Spec dovetail without any modifications or milling. So my problem is solved. The products are available from Brownells and I'm sure other suppliers. Thanks to all the responders!
I believe the Pachmayr rear sight is actually made by Mec Gar so get the one that is cheaper.
