New to the Sport

I'm new to sport shooting with pistols (I've always been a hunter and shotgun shooter) and want to start shooting pistols more, maybe even get into IPSC and I've always liked the 1911 series. What is a good 1911 pistol that many aftermarket mods can be added to (like scope, compensator, etc.) that is relatively inexpensive (not like the $1000-$2000 guns)? Also, where can you get it and the aftermarket parts for it?

Would the S&W 1911 be good for this purpose?

Thanks,
Mike

Any good 1911 will accept, with the usual (and, one hopes, minor) fitting, standard parts. Slide releases, safeties, sights, hammers, triggers and sears should all be to the standard spec.

NOTE: Para Ordnance uses LONG sear springs; about .10 longer than GI.

Kimber, Para and Springfield should all be able to give you a serviceable and competitive initial firearm for the amount you want to spend. You could also look for someone selling their gun as they move to a different division.

Might pick your division and build for it

Are you sure you want to take a limited 10 magazine and shoot with red dots and compensators against high capacity magazines in race guns?

You might consider starting limited or limited stock rather than building a race gun that doesn't match current practice.

Not saying don't follow your own star but I am saying are you sure that's what you want to do?

I am frequently reminded of drag racers long ago who would build a really nice car that didn't fit any particular class.
