Revolver Smith Recomendation Needed

Revolver Smith Recomendation Needed

Postby 1911Nut on Fri Oct 16, 2009 5:57 am

I have a 5 screw K 22 that has a timing issue - one of the "lugs" on the extractor - the part the hand pushes to rotate the cylinder has a chip out of it and it is not carrying up on that chamber. A guy suggested it would need to be tig welded and filed down.
I've looked for months for parts - there aren't any and Smith and Wesson won't work on 5 screw revolvers.

Can somebody recommend a gunsmith who can do this kind of repair?

Thanks, Art

Jim Clark Jr. has a decent revlover hand named Tommy Joe, I don't remember Tommy Joes last name....I think the company name is ClarK Custom Guns, Princeton Louisiana...Watch out for the woman answerin' the phone,"RENE," a KNOW IT ALL SMARTA$$ from WAY BACK, ...., Alwas best to talk to Jim Jr. if possible

I would only TIG the ratchet as a last resort, Guesssss I'm way behind the curve or waterloged one, possibly both....Seems like it has been rainin' every day in North La. for the last 40 years, have had no dry time this week to pratice for the GATOR CLASSIC

I didn't know parts for Smiths had gotten hard to get...I think the ratchet from any K frame will work

If You can't find one there might several used ones , possibly some new ones in My Smith parts, I don't want to have to look but I will if You can't find one, I love the old Smiths , especially My model 19 from 1957

Bill,
Thanks for the reply and information. I'll check with Tommy Joe at Clark's. I believe the K frame extractors for the 5 screw guns differ from the more recent revolvers.

I talked to a guy in Florida who purchased a lot of the older model revolver parts from Smith and Wesson and he didn't have a 22 K frame extractor, neither did Jack First, the guy who has a lot of hard to find parts. The guy at S&W told me they wouldn't work on revolvers made before 1959 because of the fear if they broke a hammer or trigger stud they couldn't repair it. They wouldn't even consider re-bluing one because they didn't want to disassemble it for fear of damaging the "un-repairable" frame studs.

Do you think you might have an extractor for a 5 screw 22 K frame?

ART...I went to a gun parts auction over in Alabama Years back, long enough ago ( 10 years or more ) I can't put a date to the rememberin', any way I bought all the Smith parts, came back with several cheap metal cabinets with plastic drawers full of Smith parts...I've gave some parts away, sold some on ebay, since I very seldom work on guns any more, I put off long as possible workin' on My own, Said all that to say "I don't know what is left" I'll look but I won't have time to look this week.....Trainin' hard for the Gator Classic, Hasn't rained since last Thur., I'v got to disc for cover crops if the weather holds so it will be after the Gator before I get back in the shop to look

Bill, That's fine - I'm in no rush. Good luck in the Gator Classic Match.

Art...tried to send You a P M....Over the weekend I had to find a hammer nose for Jack Travers 625...I looked thru all the Smith drawers, did not find an extractor for a K22...Had one hammer nose, no rivets, Jack had to use the old rivet

Bill, Thanks for checking.

I've got some leads on gunsmiths that will work on the old Smith.

Smith and Wesson won't work on the old 5 screw guns, they don't have some of the parts in case they break something during a repair.

They specifically mentioned the hammer and trigger frame studs.
