| Questions from new TPH owner
Well I finally found a TPH today. Not as good a price as I wanted, but no taxes and no registration. It came with 2 mags, the soft bag, manual, target, origional box. It is SN# T0051XX Does this make it an early one or later ? It looks to be in very good condition. I did notice that I had trouble chambering a round. I did not have the problem when I got it but noticed it later. Upon closer inspection I discovered a key hole shape dent on the top of the chamber. Apparently by dry firing I dented the chamber lip. I used a small jewelers file and some 1000 grit sand paper to polish it up and now it is ok. Is this a common problem or is it a problem?? Could the barrel be soft ?? I guess I wont dry fire it any more. Also I noticed the rear sight is not seated on the slide but had a small gap below it, but it is securely in place. |

Pocket Pistol, According to the Walther book by Gangarosa, Interarms started manufacturing the stainless versions in U.S. in 1987. He says that by 1993 they had manufactured 25,000 of them. So yours was one of the earlier ones made. The one I have, that had the MIM mag catch and caused me so much trouble, is ser #T0325xx. So yours was probably built before the introduction of MIM parts. I'd be interested in hearing if you have any trouble with yours. By the way, it's always recommended that you use some sort of snap cap or empty shell case when dry firing a rimfire.--Leigh |

LFW - Thanks. I hope to test it out tomorrow or Wedensday, and will let you know. You are right on the snap cap . I have been looking for them at the stores and the local shows but no one has them, I guess I will have to find them and order some. |

Pocket Pistol, They don't make any .22 snap caps with the spring that I have found. I'm using "Saf-T-Trainers" made by Precision Gun Specialties, Inc. phone 517-291-5788. Brownells sells them I think, also Gil Hebard. They are plastic and wear out, but come in packs of fifty and don't cost much. They cycle through the magazine so are easier to use than empty shell cases. If that dent in the chamber face is too large you may have trouble with misfires because there won't be a hard surface behind the cartridge rim when firing pit hits it.--Leigh |

Well I said I did it but I am not sure, But I did notice the firing pin imprint. BUt I think it does affect it. Winchester Super X works fine but Quick-Shok must have a harder primer as it was hard to light off. Once it went it was great. Accurate, functions good, as did the winchester. But the Winchaster did not have the zip the CCI did. I did have a problem in DA mode. When the hammer was down it would sometimes not fully cock its self before releasing, resulting in an extream light hit. Simce the TPH does not require cycling to reset a repeted pul of the trigger would usually fire it, if not a third would do. After it got to SA mode it worked fine on the Winchester, as I think the Quick-Shol was a harder primer. I will Call S&W tomorrow to see what they say. I wish I noticed the barrel before I bought it, but then again I got a good deal and if it is not much then it wil be worth it, and if it does cost and it works like it should after then I will be happy anyway |

Yeah, it's a problem. S&W fixed mine right after I bought it, but they are not manufacturing the TPH and they've probably used up the spare parts they got from Interarms. Earl's Repair is the U.S. Walther specialist, but he won't work on anything that isn't made in Germany. I think there are several smiths on this site who work on Walthers and could probably fix the trigger problem, and I don't think it's much of a chore to get someone to machine down the chamber face a little to get the dent out. Good luck.--Leigh

That is what I thought. It should be a fairly inexpensive fix. Now to find someone. |

Heck on a chance I called Teddy Jacobson about my TPH. He has worked on a fair number of them and likes them. I was going to send it to him to fix up but he talked me through the problem and the fix on the phone and by email. He is a great guy. When I first called him he was a bit gruff but after you get to know him a bit he is a really nice guy that will tell you just about anything you need to know, all you have to do is ask. Thanks Teddy J |
