1911 Slide Stop Backs Out While Shooting

Hello,

My 1911 came with a slide release window that's cut just a little low. Not much, but enough to not let the ear that's supposed to hold the release from coming out unless aligned with the take down notch from properly doing its job.

My fix thus far has been to put a bead of silver solder on the bottom of the slide stop and filing the bead so that the slide stop fits normally.

Thus far I've tried a no-name extended release, a Brownell's, and a standard GI release, hoping for a bit of difference in the ear size. I have a Wilson on the way (should be here today) as well as a McCormick. A few others are on order.

This situation is doubly dangerous as I'm a lefty and the right side of the pin is sometimes hit while I'm shooting. Though it's not bumped hard enough to disassemble the gun, it does get bumped hard enough to keep the thing from locking the slide back.

I was thinking about dropping a small bead of weld on the stop and filing that, but I warped a Brownell's slide stop by "playing around" with different methods, and that was with a butane torch. I doubt welding would be much better.

I know I can't be the first to encounter a problem like this; there's just not much on the internet about it. I think I encountered one instance of this problem, but I do believe that guns that have the problem go largely unnoticed as most are right handed and their grips would not exacerbate the problem.

Has anyone run across this? If so, have you found a solution to the problem?

Thank you,

Re: 1911 Slide Stop Backs Out While Shooting

Can you post a pic of what you are taking about? I am not sure what you mean by slide release window. Are you talking about the slide stop notch in the slide or the notch that allows you to remove the slide stop? If the slide stop is walking out it is possible that you might have a barrel fitting problem as well. You can find this out by removing the spring guide and spring along with the spring cap. Just have the barrel and slide on the gun. Then install the slide stop but only about half way. Then work the slide back and forth and see if you get any appreciable rotation or walking in or out of the slide stop. Especially when the gun is in full lockup. There should not be any unreasonable pressure on the slide stop. If there is there is a chance that it might be locking up on the slide stop and not the barrel lower lugs. There is a DVD from Barsto that shows this but it is really a no brainer.
On some of the slide stops there is an extra "ear" behind the front one. So that the slide actually slides in between the two ears. EGW is one. But to tell you the truth I am not sure of what you are talking about. When does the slide stop come out? Full lock up?All the way back when the slide is ejecting? Somewhere in between? I think what you are saying is that it is coming out somewhere in between full lockup in battery and before it gets all the way back? I will try to help if I can.

Hello,

I got it figured out. The Charles Daly frame was warped from the factory.

I bought a new gun instead of messing with the thing.

That's about the easiest solution isn't it?

Yup.

The CD now has a bent-to-fit slide stop and a small dab of silver solder to hold it up and keep the ear under the slide. It's for range duty only and not being carried any longer. Actually it's in several pieces at the moment. I've not had the chance to mix and match parts that will fit properly to put it back together.
