A few 10mm questions

Many, many years ago I flunked out of NC State and was quickly employed by the US Government (actually my "friends ans neighbors" selected me, according to the letter) for a little assignment in SE Asia. I learned to trust my old 1911 like few other things in life. Thus the odd handle I use for this site.

In about 1979/80 (been a long time ago) I bought an AMT Hardballer. And while it was no merpiec it was stainless (good for under the seat in the truck, the tackle box, packed next my skin at the small of my back, etc) and after some new magazines it never failed to go boom for over thirty years with a few new springs and lots of Mobile One for lubrication. But like me, it got old and worn, cound be rebuilt due to the fact that standard parts like extractors would fit, and I used the frame for a 22 conversion.

Like the hero I knew I was, I bought a "real" gun a Dan Wesson CBOB in 10mm and a small foutune in Double Tap 155 HPs. I have tried to strength train my hands (grip squizers, push-up and such) however, I find the combination of this much recoil and the bobtailed frame just too much for my old hands to handle. I only get time to shoot maybe one a month and If I shot about 100 rounds I found and my hands just couldn't take anymore.

Sorry to be so long winded, but wanted you to know where I am coming from. I love the way the CBOB looks and how it carries but it is just not going to work for me. I don't want a 40 due to the reliability problems and set back problems in a 1911. So I found this website http://guitarsalon.biz/10mm/10mmtips.htm#38sup where a guy claims a 10mm breechface will work with a 38 super case. Just add a 38S barrel and go.

Has anyone actually tried this and does it work?

Thanks

The "merpiec" in the post above was supposed to be masterpiece. Guess my eyes are as old as the rest of me.

Re: A few 10mm questions

I've had no more problems with a 40 cal. 1911 than any other 1911...If a 1911 is in"SPEC.", with good mags and ammo They run, that is a given....I've fired a lot of 40 cal in a 10mm barrel usein' 10mm and 40 mags....Due to a lot of variables Your 10mm/ 40 breechface might run perfect with 38S, personaly I'd go with 9x23 or 38 SC,.. since there will be slack between the breechface and the 38S barrel hood , the barrel feet runnin' across the slidestop pin must be as perfect fit as possible

Re: A few 10mm questions

Bill,

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I will try your plan and just shoot a few 40S&Ws in the 10mm barrel and, if it works, get a proper barrel fitted.

The 10mm breechface will hold a 38S with the existing extractor, but it won't grip the 9mm or 9x23 cases due to the (small) difference in rim diameter (I tried all three cases).

To be honest, I have never shot or even held a 40S&W 1911, just seems a lot of negative comments on this and other boards about using either them or 357SIG in a 1911 frame.

Fixing the CBOB remains a project I want to accomplish (maybe I'll just get younger!) but I fixed the immiedate problem with a new DW full size 10mm. It doesn't look as cool or carry as easy as the CBOB, but the little extra weight and the full length grip seems to have been just enough to tame the recoil for me. I shot a 100 rounds tonight and can still type!

Re: A few 10mm questions

Bill,

I tried your advice. Admittedly, given a lot of the stuff found on the internet, and the problems I have had getting a 1911 to work with 9mms, I didn't expect the 40s to feed well in the 10mm. To be honest the 9mm is built on an old AMT frame and that could be the source of most of the problems!

However, with the original 10mm barrel in the Dan Wesson CBOB, I loaded two rounds of 40 in a standard Dan Wesson 10mm magazine - no problems. So I loaded a full mag of eight - again no problems. Then I loaded an old Wilson 47 45APC magazine tweaked to use 10mms - and again eight rounds fired with no problems! Accuracy, who knows? it was at least as good as my old eyes and hands could do. Nice hand sized group at 15 yards. So I guess I will keep the CBOB, practice with the 40s, and save my old hands for useful things like pulling pop tops.

One last point I would appreciate some comments on - I have read that shooting short rounds (9mm in 9x23, 40S&W in 10mm, etc) will damage the chamber area. Yet I, and many thousand others, think nothing of shooting 22shorts in a 22lr, or 38 rounds in a 357 or even 40s in a Model 610. I realize that there are six chambers in a revolver (and thus more cooling time per chamber vs a semi-auto), but has anyone actually seen any damage to the chamber in a 10mm semi-auto from firing the short 40S&W?

Thanks

Gil

Re: A few 10mm questions

Gil ,..I have long contended that with a correctly adjusted EXTRACTOR, in 1911s the Extractor does the headspacein', not the breechface as many contend. Takein' into fact that I've never been one of the wealthy 1911 builders ( Some would say I've taken the old Southern Sayin' " Always scratchin' a BROKE A$$ to it's Highest level " ) , There have been times that if I wanted to shoot 40 s I had to use a 10mm barrel....For 10,000 rds or more, kept usein' them when I could buy a short chambered 40, shot them in PWUSSY matches, kind of like another Southern sayin'...."If it is workin' don't "_ -=+" with it ", or "if it is Scabed over don't pick at it". I've never seen any chamber damage, it might take 10,001, 20,000 , who knows how many

I feel the damage caused by 22 shorts or longs was not the cartridge but due to the shooter not cleanin' the barrel properly if ever cleaned at all

Just noticed You are from Baton Rouge, Look up Buddy Fuentes, Old B R cop, owns a few 1911s, into all the pistol matches goin' on in that area...Buddy posts on here often

Re: A few 10mm questions

Bill,

Thanks for the help. The "not cleaning" remark makes sense (also makes me feeel guilty!)

Thanks again.

I see if I can find Buddy.
