Problems with .38 super Colt Commander

I recently acquired a old light weight Colt Commander in .38 super. I put a box of Fiocchi 130 gr FMJ ammo thru it with no problem. I then tried a box of Winchester Silver tips 125 gr and started to have problems. Once or twice in a mag of shooting the slide stop would activate. Comparing the Silver Tip to the FMJ bullet I can see that the Silver Tip seems to be either a larger bullet or seated much further out from the case then the FMJ bullet. Looking at the slide stop catch inside of the frame where the mag follower will catch it. The silver tip bullet will almost touch it. The fmj round has more room. I am thinking that under recoil the silver tip bullet is bumping into the slide stop and locking the slide open. So is this a ammo problem? Has anyone else had this problem with Silver Tip ammo? Thanks for the help.

I too have fired both my Gov't model, and my Commander with Silvertips. No problems with either.

Not saying that your diagnosis is wrong, however. Even a pistol directly behind another one on the assembly line can differ greatly.

A lot of Us work the slide stop over so this won't happen......If this is happenin' before the mag follower contacts the slide stop it is probably the bullet shape, Try other bullets or a 45 specific slide stop

First thing that comes to mind would be your magazine... I would try a different mag, and a QUALITY mag at that.. it sounds like you might have a mag that is lose or not aligned though the top and it is allowing the next round to yaw to the side a bit when the slide is coming forward and stripping off the next loaded round..
