Star PD Purchase

I wasn't planning on making a gun purchase, but I saw a used Star PD for sale at the retail store of the range where I shoot yesterday and wound up buying it. It's in excellent appearing condition, doesn't look as though it's had more than 100 rounds through it (if that). It came with two factory mags, and a Pachemyer rap-around rubber grip (rather than the factory wood grips). I paid $250 for it, and am hoping that my impulsive purchase was not foolish. Any thoughts, advice, recommendations.

I've had two. The first one seemed to have been shot more than a little, but it ran OK until the frame cracked (actually, it still ran fine, even then). I bought a second one, in minty condition, and it was also a good gun. I really liked the extremely light weight, adjustable sight, and lack of grip safety. When Star went out of business, I decided to get off the PD bandwagon, and sold the uncracked one. I suspect the supply of recoil spring buffers is going to dry up, and then you'll be in trouble, as the buffer does double-duty as the guide rod head - the gun won't work without it. Factory mags are still really expensive, for some reason; even though all the "mag guys" at my local gun show have one or two of them, they all want $40-$50 each. I bought some less expensive, but still not cheap, aftermarket mags, and they didn't seem to fit or work as well. I replaced my PDs with a LW Commander.

I've had a PD for years. Never a problem with it, no sign of wear. I bought it new about 20 years ago, picked up some extra mags, buffers and firing pins and installed some Wolff springs.

You can get Star or Promag magazines for the PD from CDNN Investments. The Star mags are $40, the Promags are $12. Dunno about Promag, altho I do have a non-Star mag (not a clue what make) I bought long ago for the PD that works just fine.
