Source for good 9x23 winchester sthp

Hello fellow 9X23 enthusiasts . I am new to the forum and this is my second post.

I recently built a 9 X23 STI gun with a Nowlin barrel. I also fitted a 9mm barrel. The 9mm barrel ran great, but I had no end of issues with the 9X23. I checked, checked and rechecked and was quite baffled. I almost executed some fixes, I did not need and might of ruined the barrel.

Fortunately I read some of the posts here dealing with ammo related issues, particularly primer flow with Winchester Silver Tip Hollow Point (STHP). It described my problems to a T. Along with light strikes I also experienced, failures to fully chamber from primer brass on the back of the barrel hood, and slide hesitation while moving forward from the round being fed snagging on the primer brass clog in the firing pin hole, it would some times stop at this point.

I switched to the Winchester, white box 124 jacketed soft point and the gun runs a like a champ. I would like to thank everyone that has shared their experiences on this forum as you have definitely helped me, thank you.

I still have about 200 rounds of the STHP and it all has the red sealant on the primers. Dane has mentioned that this is an indicator you will have problems with the ammo. I ordered it from Midway in early 2010. Does anyone know of a source for 9X23 Win STHP with out the red sealant, that runs as good as the Win 124 jacketed soft point (JSP)?

Thanks for your advice.

For My Money, ....of therefore lack of money , reloadin' 9x23 brass is the only way to go....I like Winny Brass....one big reason for reloadin' is factory 9x23 just don't have the velocity the 9x23 is capable of

I chronod the 124 winchecter jacketed soft points at 1556, on a cold day. That is about 660 fpe. Can you safely push them faster than this?

They can do over 1800 fps with somethin' in the 120s gr bullet....other side of the coin is ...the bullet must be up to runnin' that fast...JUST THINK...You are runnin a fast string , bullet leaves its jacket in the barrel , You send another after it , say one tenth of a second split......FUN STARTS...If this happens SAFEST place to be is behind the pistol. The barrel could split , Slide Bow out an eight of an in. or so...maybe a couple of Rounds go off in the mag , mag blows out, grips splinter...NO BIG DEAL...Knowledge and Wisdom cost more than Education an Information.....The 9x23 case is the one I neck to .224 and run 2500fps from a 5in. 1911

WOW, thanks Wild Bill. I was impressed with the mid 1500 range. Think i will steer clear of the 1800 range and shoot for something in the low 1700.

I have about 400 rounds through it with no signs of lug battering, I set it up with a good amount of lug engagement, and adjusted the lower lugs so the barrel and slide stay locked just a bit longer than a regular 1911 in 45. So I think it will stand up to a little more powerful loads,

Thanks for the graphic warning on, jacket peel in the barrel, was it exciting?
Can the win STHP bullet in 115 handle the speed?

Your 9X23 to .224 sounds like a hand rifle, 2400 is just a pinch less that a 5.56 SBR

why wnt such speeds?

even under the old ipsc power factor of 180, you only need to get the 125 gr jhp to 1450fps to score major factor. If you seek such speeds, you'd better have a shok buff, fully supported barrel, heavy springs, and great, thick webbed cases, hard primers, etc, cause you are talking about 35,000 CUP pressures here, and for what? do you hunt with this load, or what?
