| Stay 38 Super or get a 9x23 barrel too?
Looks like I'll be getting a Colt .38 Super Commander. I want to get a 9x19 barrel for cheap plinking and for my wife to shoot. I'd also like a 9x23 barrel gunsmith fitted for max accuracy and for defense/hunting...or should I just stick with Super? Thanks! |

Before changing out the barrel, see what you have now. The .38Super stock barrels are a little more accurate now that when they first came out. I always allow for a good break-in period (even if I purchase used) before making any modifications. I have wasted too much of my hard earned money on mods that did not need to be done. |

.38 Super barrels now headspace on the case mount (as does the .45 ACP), not the semi-rim as in the past. This has improved accuracy greatly. Some .38 Super barrels will chamber 9x23. Check and see. Regards, Walt |

At the top of this section is a sticky written in 2002 on the 9x23 caliber. "bad 9x23 advice?". This man has fired alot of 9x23 ammo in his life-- good advice. If you go with the ramped barrel you will have one of the best defense guns ever made. My witness Match now carrys a 9mm barrel reamed to 9x23 Win., slight throughting, ramped & supported barrel. Seems going this way takes alot of deamons off the table. Keep in mind that your 38Super should run 38Super/Comp which loaded to MAJOR is running like 1375fps which is faster than 357Sig ammo, not bad for a 38S. Very flat shooting and accurate. The gun I'm buying is an '81. I don't know yet if it headspaces on the rim or case. Probably the rim. I more than likely go to 9x23 and 9x19 so I can more easily switch. |
