I am interested in getting a lever .44 and I found a Marlin 1894 at a local shop for $325. It has see through mounts and a Lyman All-American 4X scope. I checked the manufacture date and it looks like it was made in 1977 (no safety). The steel looks to be in excellent shape and the wood is fair to good. Is the dealer asking a reasonable price for it? Is there anything I should look for as I'm new to lever actions?

Sounds fairly reasonable to me, but of course try to get an even better deal if you really want the gun.
If I bought the gun, the first thing off the bat I'd do is to ditch those see-thru mounts. You don't want to have your cheek floating in mid-air above the comb trying to get your eye centered in the scope. You want to mount the scope as low as you can so that you have a consistent "anchor point" for your cheek on the stock.
Marlin recently dropped their blue/walnut option for the .44 magnum and I saw one (new) listed at $500. A bit overpriced... but I wanted one real bad last winter. ops:

I offered $275 and we met at $300. I just bought a stainless 5.5" SBH in .44 mag so OBVIOUSLY I had to get a .44 lever to keep it company. Now I just need to find the time to try them out. Thanks for your input.
