.458 with lighter bullets

I guess this is for Dane or anyone else who has as much knowledge about the big one as he does..

Anyone tried lighter bullets in the .458 Win...like the 400 or 450 gr softs from North Fork...you have the benefit of the same diameter, more velocity, and a bonded core bullet...seems that even Hornady has found a way to load up the 500 gr stuff to 2100+ fps...the 400's at 2350 or 2400 fps might be just the ticket for big bears or big plains game in Africa...

Anyone with any first hand experience? Seems a shame to rechamber to Lott when the new powders and new bullet technologies might make the old war horse viable again...

Hi David, first of all let me say that I don't own a 458 but there are a couple of places that you can find some information for lighter bullet loads for the 458. First is Phil Shoemaker....he writes for Handloader, Rifle and Successful Hunter magazines....all Wolfe Publications. He and his son both use 458's as bear stoppers in Alaska. Phil is also at 24hourcampfire.com and would no doubt answer your questions.
Second place to look would be to find a Handloader Digest 1994 edition. Ray Ordorica has an article entitled The 458 Revisited that deals with a variety of 350 gr to 500 gr loads for the 458. I believe Ray loaned his 458 out to bear guide Andy Runyon when Andys 416 wildcat bear stopper burnt up in a fire. I found my copy at First Stop Guns in Rapid City SD. They might still have a copy there. Both of these sources would have all the info that you are looking for. Good luck...DS
