| hi-power extended thumb safety
Hello: I've been looking for an extended thumb safety for one of my FEG Hi-power pistols. I found one on ebay, however it appears to be missing the detent ball and spring. How do I remove them from the old safety and would they likely fit this one? For your reference, I've included the link from ebay. Thank you in advance. Hello Ray, Going by the photo, it appears to be a C&S Safety that you bought - so in this case, I'd just call C&S and see if they'd sell you a replacement detent & spring. See the very bottom of this page for Contact Info Store Policies On the Classic FN-Browning High Powers - the detent & spring is retained by a small retaining pin, and on the Post Classics (MK2s & MK3s w/ambi safety's) the detent is simply retained by a tight end-coil on the spring that fit's over a .0875" diameter stem on the base of the detent and the spring it's self is retained in it's counter bore by an oblonged bottom coil - a lite press fit for lack of better words. FWIW: I can't stand ambi-safety's, but The Factory FN-Browning ambi-safety's are all I use - but I make single-side units out of them by cutting the R.H. side of the shaft off at the roll pin hole (where the R.H. side lever attaches) then I file the end of the shaft to a nice full-radius and polish & reblue it. |

Bob, Does anyone else make an aftermarket thumbsafety for the HP? I have a custom job from Arizona Response Systems with the C&S safety. It is OK, but I like the ones installed by Heirloom, but no luck in getting them to sell me one. |

Hello Cohee, Jim Garthwaite turns the factory(?) safety's into beautiful works of art, but I don't know if he'd do one that wasn't intended for his Custom High Powers. Follow this link and watch for The HP in the revolving photos. Jim Garthwaite Pistolsmith, Inc. Last edited by Bob Reed; 04-29-2012 at 07:44 AM. |

| Extended Thumb Safety Revisited
A couple of things. There's another, apparently identical, extended thumb safety on ebay. It is also apparently from C&S. I called C&S and they will sell the 3 small parts that will make this safety work for around $8. Secondly, I really like the shape and feel of the FEG extended thumb safety. It is listed on Numrich's site for KBI/Kassinar PJK9HP pistols but has been sold out for quite some time. A very kind gentleman from the Hipowertalk forum agreed to sell me one of his spares and it quickly was installed with no fitting required on my latest Hi-power, an FM M90. It functions perfectly and looks like it belongs there even though it is blued and the pistol is, I believe, enamel over parkerizing. The extra added plus is that the feel is much more positive than the tiny safety on older hi-powers and clones. Nearly as good as the "snick" on a well fitted 1911 safety. As always, your mileage may vary! Ray ![]() |
