Commercial Colt Post War 1948
I am looking for info on a Colt 1911A1 Commercial Colt Serial # C233XXX. Very confused over original finish, husband says chrome and been told that certain serial #'s were nickle finish around my serial #. This weapon is my duty weapon. Was told it was a '70 series but found out different. Anyone know if having gun modified increases or decreases value. Beavertail, ambi safeties, mag well, extended slide lock, etc. Curious about finish.

SS, the Government Models made right after WWII were often asssembled using prewar and/or left over military parts. I'm not aware of any that shipped with nickel finish but the only way to know for sure is to get a factory letter from Colt which will cost you $100 or so. With the mod's you describe I don't think it has any value as a collectible. HTH.

Colt Gov't. Model #C233XXX was one of 6,501 pistols made in 1948 for the commercial market. Only Colt can tell you if it was originally made with a nickel finish. The modifications you describe would normally detract from the value unless a famous and “collectable” smith made them. If the beavertail is drop in and the other parts replaceable, they could be substituted for GI parts and some of the value restored.
Original 1911s and A1s are getting more and more scarce. Depending on the quality of the finish, you should be able to get at least $500.00 for your Colt. More, if the finish is well done. I am quoting "around here" prices. Your area may be different.
I would be interested is seeing a picture of your duty gun.
