I have a colt trooper .38 sn#917632. I can't seem to find the correct grips for it. Does anyone know what i should be asking for. The colt python grips are wrong and the trooper iii grips are wrong. Any help??

Again, all medium Colt "E&I" frame revolvers used the same grips. If you have grips that really are made for a Python, they will fit the Trooper because both used the same frame. My suspicion is that you somehow got a set of grips that were mis-labeled and are for a different model. Many sellers have no idea what the grips actually fit, and it's common to see grips made for a Colt "D" frame like the Diamondback or Detective Special listed as "Python grips". As for after market grips, again, it's not uncommon to see them mis-labeled or in the wrong box. If you're looking for genuine Colt Target grips for a Trooper, here's what they looked like. First, Trooper grips would have Silver Colt Medallions. During the Trooper period, only the Python had Gold medallions, although the same type of grips were used on the Python, Trooper, 357 Model, and Officer's Model Match. The very early First Type Target grips were fully checkered. These were used from 1953 to about 1961. ![]() The Second Type Target grips were used from 1961 to the later 1970's. Note the "half moon" checkering border below the medallions, and the "thumb rest" (actually a loader cut) only on the left side: ![]() The Third Type was used from, the late 1970's until the early 1990's. Note the "thumb rest" on both sides, and the checkering in a straight line under the medallions. These were probably not used on the Trooper since the Trooper was discontinued in 1969. ![]() Last, it would held identify what you have if you could post a picture. Again, since you say that what you have will NOT fit, I think you have totally wrong grips that aren't made for the Colt E&I frame. |
