Have heard about new double action recoil springs. I'm told the ones that come with G4 will not fit my G3 23. I'm also told that there are several aftermarket versions that WILL fit. My question is are they any good?

You are correct. The new recoil spring setup in the Gen 4's will not fit in your Gen 3. I had a Gen 3 G23 and I ordered a non-captured stainless steal guide rod and springs from Wolff Gunsprings Wolff Gunsprings - Firearm Springs for Semi-Auto Pistols, Revolvers, Rifles, & Shotguns.
When I ordered, I also got 3 springs.
I don't remember the specific spring weights.
I took all 3 to the range with a selection of ammo and tried each one.
Stock weight felt just that... stock. The guide rod added a little weight to the front.
+1 took the sharpness of the recoil down a bit.
+2 was my favorite, but I had an FTF in the first 200 rounds and switched back to the +1.
I used the +1 for a long time and loved it. I wish the +2 would have worked out as it made the pistol really comfortable to shoot, but I could not abide the FTF.
