I am getting my first custom 1911 here in a few months, and wanted to treat it to something a bit nicer than a Pelican case if I could, though those are nice.
I do not want to pay the ~$400 for a custom case, and wondered if there was a maker whom offered wood pistol cases. Old-timey canvas and leather would be ok too.
I would like it to be functional, not just display.

Les Baer sells them, I believe they are at http://www.lesbaer.com but I'm not sure. They might say Baer on them though, and if that is not what your gun is then I say the "cheese" factor is high. You could make one out of some nice wood, but since you're asking where to buy one I don't think that is the way you want to go. SO, - I would get one of those nice aluminum cases that come with the foam in them that you cut out for whatever goes in there. They look really sharp, they lock up nice for airline travel and you get to cut the foam for whatever you want to put in there so you get a nice custom fit. I would say log onto http://www.brownells.com and check it out. You may want to do this when your wife is out shopping because you are liable to spend 1,200 bucks while you browse on stuff that you didn't even know you couldn't live without. That place is dangerous, browsing there is like stopping into a titty bar for just one cup of coffee - never works out that way. Good luck though.

There's an ad in the latest Shotgun News for a case, sold by Pacific Ordnance (562)695-0297. "These sturdy wood cases are covered in 100% cotton canvas and fitted with leather corners. The case interiors are wood partitioned and covered in velvet throughout. Each case is fitted with a removeable wood cartridge block in the appropriate caliber. Cases have luggage type handles and latches with combination lock." The 1911-sized case is $70+sh. They look pretty good, in the admittedly murky picture.

You'll probably want to have a custom wood case made but I had made a really cool display case after watching US Marshals (2) with wesly snipes. I took a larger sized cigar box, cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to fit inside, traced out the shape of my springfield, cut it out, placed it in the cigar box and layed purple velvet inside and tucked the edges. Then I put the gun in it and it fit like a glove. The cigar box was really nice looking and the gun looked awesome inside. The cigar boxes are free and the velvet cost $2.00. I have a picture at home I could scan in if your interested. (Email because I don't check this part of the forum very frequently)

I bought one of the cases from Pacific Ord. They are pretty nice for the money. My only complaint so far is that the cartridge block holes seem to be cut to the BULLET diameter, not the OD of the case. It is marked .45, but I am going to have to sand out the holes a touch to get the cases to go in. Other than that is seems to be a pretty fair copy of an English fitted type case. Not the same quality, but fair for the $$$.
